Hi all.

Looking from Lapta, appears to be a bad fire on Karsiyaka mountainside. Lots of activity from the fire service.

With this wind, it could spread.

Please check outside your windows if you live locally.

It is actually in the village. We are about mile away and stretches about 100 yards, or would appear from our view at the side of village.

Looks very serious for house holders in centre of village and we have passed a messgae to an aquaentance to get home asap as it appears close to where they live. Do not want to go up there cos all the emergency services are out. Also power is off to Karsiyaka, do not know if it is becuase of fire or as a precaution.

It was on scrub land at the side of our house, an electric cable came down taking a tree with it, thanks to the quick actions of our neighbours, it is now taken care of..............................Phew!

Crikey Britvic, scarey, was it the high winds that brought the line down?

Just been speaking to a neighbour and friend in the TRNC about this as our property is next to the fire.

Our house is on the ravine in Yasam Sokak. The fire apparently came down the mountain on the other side of the ravine. There were about 10 fire engines, and they had to bulldoze our wall adjacent to the ravine to be able to fight the fire

Our pool cover is off, so sounds like they used our pool water to fight the fire.

Our and neighbours houses are OK, but there is a fairly new white painted house up the ravine that may have been destroyed

Fortunately a couple of months ago our neighbour installed a large pipe from his well to the ravine side, which helped keep the fire away from our houses

No reported casualties

The area is covered in smoke, so guess we won't know for sure what the situation is until tomorrow

I have just got home.

Britvic, the fire came within 20 metres of your house, but myself and a small boy of about 13...managed to put out the fire...there were 2 dogs in the garden, scared to death, but i am happy to say, they are now roaming free in Karsiyaka! Don't know if they are owned, or were just hiding out.

Soldiers were bloody marvelous! And so were the local farmers! Farmers came out with their diggers and dug massive trenches, and the soldiers were so blooming calm! 112 came out and administered first aid...i personally helped a boy who had a suspected broken ankle and a few burns...gotten while running away from the fire.

Ambulances and fire engines are still rumbling up and down the village...we have been told by soldiers, to stay in our homes, and do NOT fall to sleep....the fire is under control right now..but there is a chance that a new one may start....so...if you live in Karsiyaka...DO NOT GO TO SLEEP TONIGHT!

Glad to hear you are ok DD.

We saw the flames from where we live in Karsiyaka (seaside).

Couldn't get hold of our friend's who live in the village so we went up to see if they were ok.

When we arrived we couldn't believe what we were seeing.

Our friend's were ok but obviously concerned that the flames were heading toward their house.

Have to say the locals were amazing. Everyone was running around doing what they could before the fire service etc arrived en masse.

We ended up in someone's garden handing buckets of water from their pool to the locals who were dousing the flames heading toward's this particular house.

Really was frightning to see, but the community spirit was something else.

Hope all who were involved in whatever way, return home safely.

I have never been so terrified in my whole life, the fire started at the back of my garden and was coming towards my house on 2 sides, as i am typing this the bulldozers are still working hard to cover over all the little fires that are still going in the ravine. I think i must have had half of karsiyaka in my garden tonight helping and i thank each and everyone of them for everything they done. Ahmet the new karsiyaka muhktar was brilliant and i have to give Kibtek 20 out of 10 for getting the power back on so quick. I was expecting at least a couple of days with no electric. Daylight will show the true damage and i have to say i am not looking forward to seeing my beautiful mountainside and ravine destroyed but at least nobody was hurt.

Although we have never met, I did see you and my hubby and I were one of many that ended up in your garden!

A very frightening experience for anyone who had property in the line of the fire.

As you say, daylight will show the true extent of the damage but thank god nobody was killed or seriously injured.

If you need any help with any cleaning up to be done...please post.

Indded wondeful Troodo. What a difference from the UK. There the police and fire brigade would stop you doing anything to help - and you would probably need some sort of certificate from Health & Safety and proof of adequate insurance cover just to stand and watch.

Maybe that is why there is such a sense of community here which has long been lost in the UK.
