Hi Just out of interest do you have sample homes to show where the remedial repair is over 12 months old and still in perfect condition? We have previously spent a small fortune having remedial damp proofing carried out without success yet every workman claimed to have the answer to the Cyprus damp problem!

trnclion I'm happy to come and look at your villa if you so wish. As I said above just phone or email me. It sounds like your villa's damp problem is pretty intransigent. Until I see it I can't say if we can help. If I am doubtful you will be the second to know. John

Many ex pats refer to villas as "concrete tents". After aggregating some 15 years of living in the Med I think of them as "concrete sponges". I am sure that there is remedial work and applications which will result in varying degrees of success but in my experience it goes right to the root, so to speak. The villa needs to be double brick, cavity filled, on a damp course or some other build equally defensive to damp, from the outset. The heat within during winter months needs to be a dry heat supplied by way of radiators using oil or gas. Burning gas bottles, oil burners, and the like for heat can lead to mold on walls, wardrobes, bedding and soft furnishings. This does not come cheap but better than being in hospital with "fungi" instead of lungs. With the wisdom of hindsight we also have no flat roofs whatsoever not even over patios and our roof solarium is wooden decking so that rain water and humidity goes to ground and not walls.

malsancak Very interesting. Couldn't agree with him more. Especially where he says: "The Cyprus solution of rubbing down plaster and re-decorating will not solve the problem although this appears to be the way many builders work. If the remedial works are inadequate then the damp reappears very quickly as many people are finding. For the works to be effective the root cause needs to be identified, the problem cured or isolated before remedial works of repair and redecoration take place." Indeed we don't do plastering and redecorating. We leave that to others unless there is a very small amount indeed of remedial work to be done well after the root cause has been dealt with.
