Received the following info today. Despite promises of a regular collection, over nearly 1 year, Catalkoy Beledere has not collected any rubbish from Kyrenia Animal Rescue Centre for many months. KAR have been in continuous discussions with them - KAR have even purchased (at considerable expense) industrial bins which the Beledere said were needed - and still there is no collection. As you can imagine this is causing a major problem at the Centre for everyone (staff/volunteers/tourists etc) especially as the summer heat builds. Today Catalkoy Beledere AGAIN agreed to collect the rubbish. They have now been told that if by Weds 4th August the rubbish collections have not commenced then NO Catalkoy area dog or cat issues will be dealt with by KAR. KAR are hoping that they will not have to implement their threat and will be extremely sorry for the animals and residents of Catalkoy if they do - but they feel unable to continue to offer their services in the face of such uncooperation

Sorry to hear that. Why is it always the same? Constant promises, with no intention of anything being done! One of the reasons why I am o longer there.

| Perhaps in the dead of night someone should leave a good few bin bags on the steps of the Catalkoy Beledere with a note saying please help keep Catalkoy clean and tidy.I am not saying Kar should but a few of the home-owners.. saying that they may well just leave the bags sitting around for months before they even notice.. | Has anyone from KAR tried contacting the new Catalkoy Mayor & is the answer to the question being asked in message 4, the reason for the problem? |

Scruff - yes there was a meeting some 10 days ago with both English and Turkish committee members and the new Mayor - same promises and nothing happening. Re message 4 - Catalkoy Beledere know that the Centre is on Forestry land and it has long been established by the authorities that Catalkoy is the Beledere responsible for the rubbish collection from that land. It is like asking who pays for the rubbish collection at the various municipal beaches and picnic areas isn't it ? !!! Catalkoy Beledere accept that it is their responsibility but just make excuse after excuse and promise after promise. KAR are having to use scarce enough resources trying to deal with it in the absence of help from Beledere - they cannot continue to do so. However they are still hoping that they will not have to implement their threat but assure all Catalkoy residents that if there is a medical call (eg stray involved in RTA) then they will still do their best to help if they can. I did suggest ..continued

that instead of taking the rubbish away to Dikmen themselves - they simply stop and unload it all every time at Catalkoy Beledere offices !

the2ofus I appreciate the work carried out by KAR, but the Rescue Centre is a complex where KAR's business is carried out and surely they should contribute some monies for refuse collection. Kar have an office and a shop in town, they don't get free rates for them, do they?

Quarmby The Beledere have traditionally picked up the refuse at the centre and despite numerous promises to do so recently, have failed to honour that promise. My understanding is that the Beledere contribute not a single kurus to KAR who do their level best to deal with strays from all the municipalities. In light of this support, surely it is not unreasonable to expect a little support in return ? Then again, I suppose KAR could take a leaf out of the locals book and just dump all the refuse in the nearest ravine Paul

Lilli KAR used to collect cans that used to go for recycling - People were really taking to the idea and many restauarants etc were taking part. But then the recycling centre closed down. It actually worked out that it was costing the same (or more) for KAR to store the cans then take them to collection centre as they received in return. But they would have carried on with it because of the principle behind recycling. !!!! Crazy world isn't it. Still maybe the Belederes next excuse for not collecting the refuse will be that they have no petrol. KAR cannot even burn the rubbish as the Centre is on Forestry land and as such fires are not permitted.

Update There has still been no refuse collected from the Rescue Centre - KAR will not be dealing with any animal problems (except medical emergencies) in the Catalkoy area until the situation is resolved. Cases that had already been reported to the office, that need KAR assistance , prior to August 4th will still be dealt with but no new cases will be actioned. As stated previously KAR are saddened about the effect this may have on residents and animals alike but they feel that they have no alternative. Residents of Catalkoy can still call the office for advise about animal issues on 0533 8694098.

Still no refuse collections on Monday when we visited the centre. We went to see the Beledere beforehand who gave no explanation for this. KAR should NOT have to pay anything towards refuse collection anyway as they are cleaning up the mess left by the animals that belong to TRNC. We do not agree with many of their policies and have told them so BUT no-one can deny that without the years of hard work they have contributed, we would be completely over-run with strays and abused animals. Whilst the status quo is far from acceptable IT IS better than it would be without their help. Personally, if I were in charge there, no rubbish would be left on site as would have loaded the van every day and taken it elsewhere!!!!!!Preferably to the picnic areas or beaches. When in Rome eh?
