Currently in the UK and own a Tom Tom sat nav. Coming back over soon and wondering if anybody knows if maps are available for North cyprus? Do i need to buy a different brand? Sounds daft but once you've got one, its hard to live without!

hi jonnie I have also asked this question in a thread on maps but haven't had a response yet. I was also wondering if there would be any problem taking it over the border, don't want it confiscated. Great arn't they. I am still looking into the possiblity of getting north cyprus maps on the tom tom software.

hi i just got a new sat nav from ebay, came from china, has uk, us, europe , and cyprus, works ok in uk, have loaded maps for us and cyprus onto sd cards, they look ok, though may not have all small roads, going over in may will try it out and report. unit cost £87 + £14 delivery, not bad if works ok.

So far there is no map for north cyprus, the south one shows only some of the old main roads and is not up to date

There are GPS systems that show the North side, but the South side is now threatening all companies that maps in the north should have the original Greek names of towns, streets cities etc.. The GC's are really popular right now with these companies, there is a way around this, when you buy one, if you ask for it to be left the way it is in Turkish, they cant change them. Here is a link to the story, if it doesnt come through, jsut go to the Cyprus mail and use keyword GPS in the archives december 13th. http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/

My son recently downloaded Nokia's map for Cyprus but it is very basic, just showing the main road from Famagusta to Nicosia and Kyrenia. The names are in English and Turkish only and for south Cyprus it says "Kibris Rum Kesimi" which means South Greek Section. I expect they will develop this map further and it is meant for customers from Turkey. Nokia is now advertrising heavily their latest model with GPS capability. You can downloadd the latest relevant maps automatically using GPRS but my son wisely blocked that option. ismet

petez, There is some information on the project, now 7 or 8 months old, posted here: http://trncvillaowners.phpbb3now.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3658&st=0&sk=t&sd=d There are a couple of pages of postings... If you want to see how the project is currently progressing, 'Dotcom Dave' is the leading light in TRNC - contact details: - David Janda - on 0533 847 95 54 or email at david@dotcomdave.com , and as you say, the main website for the project is at http://www.openstreetmap.org/ I don't know if the maps from this source would be compatible with 'Tom Tom' - I suggest that you 'suck it and see'! regards, Keith.

Hi, Last year i contacted TomTom directly nand asked them the same question, their reply was,(sit down for this), as the country known as TRNC are at war there is no forseeable plans for any routes to be made available.

Am glad to see Tom Tom are on the ball then.. msg 9 Thanks for the info Keith. Will take a look at what they said I went to a web seminar about the future of maps and there is some incredible stuff going on with open source and stuff like that Interactive maps that make the google maps thing look very tame.. will post some links to some of the other projects. Unfortunatley because of the situation in North Cyprus at present no-one wants to do it commercially.

When I asked a car salesman if the GPS in a Japanese car worked, he said "Look, you've got the mountains on one side, and the sea on the other - what do you need GPS for?" I temporarily lost my ability to argue...
