What has happened over the last couple of month's, the speed cameras have sprouted up over ever piece of highway it seems.

I don't think live in the TRNC and come over from time to time, I am definitely suprised by the number of them. Will anything come of a visitor getting a ticket, as I guess at the moment they are not linked to the borders to stop you from leaving before paying.

What is the fine they are charging for a ticket?

They were nice roads. I guess no one has thought of cutting them down.

Spray car wash foam over the number plate, let it dry on, human eyes can discern the figures letters etc, speed cameras just photograph a white smear.

Tickets are linked to the computer at border crossings so wat ch out the fines vary with the amount of miles you are over the limit. If you have a ticket you will be told at the border to go to the police station and pay up.

a friend got stopped at border and issued a speeding ticket. Think it cost 170tl. The photo had been taken about 2-3 years earlier so it obviously takes a long time to get on the border control computers.

Ken,

How do you normally use these car foams? I have not seen any, are they readily available? I am thinking about the poor chap who comes regularly to my house and brings a few of them at a time

The Lefkosa-Magusa road is disgusting - literally one at every junction.

I guarantee the new Girne-Alsancak road will have at least 3 cameras by next year.

They certainly are not helping in reducing accidents, there are deaths on the roads every day..

Cameras are the easy option for the authorities in any country and a nice little earner!! It does slow down the traffic which is not a bad thing however it does not stop the serial offender of which there appears to be many in TRNC.

It is obvious that nobody is bothered, even reading this thread, about penalties stong action must be taken here to cut down the horrendous death rate. There has got to be a a "3 counts" and out sort of system for those caught regularly exceeding the speed limit by a high amount. Jail does not work so it has to be car to the crusher with no right of appeal.

As for the comments above regarding what happens when you leave the country, may be the answer is DO NOT BREAK THE SPEED LIMIT! Yes, if you are caught on camera in a hire car if not when you leave certainly when you return there may be a hefty fine or refusal to enter TRNC. Imagine paying for your holiday and then you are refused entry!!!!

Speed camera's are a double edge sword, and do not discriminate unlike some of the policemen and taffic wardens here.

The system employed here is not set up correctly the camera's have no graduation marks set up on them and therfore it is impossible for them to accuratly determin your speed which they would have to do if you elected to go to court, the system is floored here, it's up to the law to prove you were speeding not up to you to prove otherwise.

The radar guns are also highly inaccurate and not used properly by the police, for instance they can target a vehicle and instead of aiming at the car they bounce the signal off the road which gives a high false reading then pull the car over showing whatever they have falsified, all these device's have to be calibrated and certificated prior to use on a daily basis if they are to be used in court of law, remember they have to prove you were speeding and the evidence would not be safe for a conviction on that basis.

So dont speed !

The speed camera system in the TRNC is much better than that of the UK.

In the UK you get only ONE speed camera warning, and this sign is VERY small.

However, in the TRNC, you first get 2 speed camera warning signs - and then you get at least 2 VERY LARGE speed camera warning signs with the speed limit.

I dont know about you but i would much rather have large signs rather than "graduation lines".

This clearly shows that in the uk the purpose of speedcameras is to "make money" - if it really was meant to be for safety, they would put large signs in order to make people slow down.

Whereas in the TRNC you DO get large signs and therefore you are more likely to slow down.

Although, all in all, they are a load of crap.

They don't use flash photography here.. it's all digital, hence this ingenious tip won't actually work.

The only solution is to reduce your speed.

The size of fine depends on how much over the speed limit you are:

0 - 20kph over - 130TL

20 - 40 kph over - 185TL

40 kph + - 230TL

Like others, I seriously doubt the accuracy of the cameras after recently receiving a ticket for doing 87kph in a 65 kph zone. We pass the same camera every single day and always slow down for it. On the day in question, the road was undergoing preparatory work for the new bypass and it would have been impossible to do 87 kph. I asked if we could appeal against the ticket and was told that I had to go to Nicosia where I would need to pay 60TL to get a copy of the photo. No use if the camera isn't calibrated so decided to pay the fine as the likelihood of a succesful appeal is pretty much non-existent and the cost of trying to pursue it would cost more than the ticket.

I am interested in the "Graduation lines". Can you supply more information please? I have unpaid 15 tickets in my file, so every bit of information is useful if the matter ever comes to court

There is a simple solution for not getting fines you know.....DON'T DO IT!! SPEED KILLS!!

Why is this even a topic??? At least the authorities are 'trying' to do something!! Being maimed or killed does not seem to have any affect on peoples speed, so maybe hitting them in the pocket really is the solution!!

msg 20

Going through an army village at a maximum of 50 k/h is really comical. It has nothing to do with safety. I have been driving for over 40 years and never had an accident. careful driving is one thing, slowing down at cameras and then getting back to "normal" speed is another. Let us not kid ourselves. I know you are one of the unlucky ones who suffered from a car accident and thus you are sensitive over the issue but the speed cameras have little to do with safety. they are mainly revenue earners but not from me (so far).

Most residents know exactly where the speed cameras are placed - on our stretch of road it has become a race track after the last speed camera [outside Lemar Karaolanoglu] going east into town and vice versa.

Now the 'posh' coffee shops have sprouted up [near Astro], mostly patronised by the wealthy locals, who always park their 'top of the range' vehicles on the pavement, the 'in thing' is to roar away from the coffee shops, wheels spinning while 'redlining the tacho', and race to a point just out of range of the Lemar sited speed camera - then do the same coming back.

Motorbikes and quads regularly do 'wheelies', often staying up on the rear wheel(s) for up to fifty metres as they pass the school.

'There ain't a cop in sight - an' if ya think I'm happy, you're right,

Six days on the road an' I'm gonna make it *home tonight!'

Msg 20 is correct.

Whatever the motives for these cameras just keep to the limits and you'll be OK - always assuming (Oh look, another flying pig) the camera is calibrated and set up properly.

From what has been said earlier can i presume you are just as likely to get a ticket whether you are speeding or not?

Message 21: I'm very surprised Elko at you boasting about not paying your speeding fines. First it is highly irresponsible to speed, secondly you know they have high accident rate in North Cyprus, thirdly your lack of concern for other road users (including pedestrians) amazes me.

You frequently boast about taking on the establishment and I support you in some cases, but the traffic speed restrictions on the roads are quite clear and unambiguous. For you to have so many tickets shows a complete disregard for the law of the land. Basically you are choosing which laws you obey.

Imagine if we all did that?

You should be ashamed of yourself,of all the things to boast about,15 tickets, have you ever thought about when you approach the camera at the correct speed you do not have the inconvenience of having to speed up again.

I know a carpenter who boasts he has been doing woodwork for 45 years,no one has the heart to tell him that when he cuts wood it is like the hind leg of a donkey.

I just hope to god that you never have anyone come to you and tell you a member of your family have been killed by a speeding car.

To make matters worse, you have written under your photo, most helpful person

I am a careful driver and my normal cruising speed is hardly ever over 100 k/h. I am always extra careful in residential areas and always give way to anybody who needs it. But speed cameras is something else. They have nothing to do with wreckless driving. I know, the correct thing to do is never pass a camera over the speed limit i.e. slow down and after it back to normal. If anybody claims that they never do that, I simply don't believe them. I do the same, the only difference is that I am more forgetful about these "photographers" on the highways. So I forget to smile, that's all

I was in the police station paying my fine yesterday. In front of me were an expat couple who were querying their particular fine. It stated that at just after 2a.m. on a particular date they were recorded doing a particular speed on the road to Ercan airport. Bang to rights you may think, however, they argued that they had flown out of Ercan that morning at 3a.m. and in order to report for their flight had arrived at Ercan at 1a.m. They even had the flight documents to prove it. Now i suppose that the internal clock on the camera could have been wrong, but if so this also calls into question whether the camera was calibrated correctly. The response from the police.....you guessed it, a shrug of the shoulders

In court you ought to be able to ask the police to provide the calibration data for the speed camera in question...

This is a joke of course because it won't have been done.

The lack of markings on the road that prove that distance travelled between two pictures can be used as proof absolute of your guilt/innocence makes me wonder if they actually know how GATSO camera equipment works.

Having said that I have been caught speeding a few times and hand on heart - I was.... I'd love to be able to tell them where to put the tickets but if it would prevent re-entry on the occasion when we venture abroad it would be most inconvenient... so we pay up and mostly shut-up.

Message 28 - so that makes it right then?

Come on Elko, just accept you're happy to break the laws you don't like, and then answer my question - what would happen if everyone took that same point of view?

I'm not saying I don't speed at times, but I certainly wouldn't think of boasting about it.

message 38,

Speed cameras have most definately NOT gone in the UK - they are still standing in their large numbers and even more are being enforced - a typical example is the Blackwall tunnel average speed cameras that are currently being installed/tested.
