What I want to know is, will these banks who have just said they are in profit by several billion pounds be made to pay back the billions of pounds the tax payers put in the coffers to bail them out? If not, why not? The butlers wife

The taxpayer will get the Lloyds money back as thay own 40+ % of the shares (Same with Northern Rock and RBS, which the taxpayer owns more of). Just need a chancellor with a cool head, to be patient and wait for the share price to reach a higher level. It is already back to the price the government bought for (for the taxpayer), but if they keep showing a profit I'm sure this will rise further.

teatime, Ever hear about risk capital? What and when they borrowed, there was no institution in the world, who would have taken on that risk. And now small companies plea for capital, and it falls on stoney ground. INCREASED MARGINS AND EXECUTIVE BONUSES while the rest of us "taxpayers" scrap around for the crumbs off the Captains table. They should hold their heads in shame. wynyardman

BSBC received no aid at all. The Socialist Worker is as usual telling lies to suit it's own nonsensical political ends. The bank said: "HSBC has not sought capital support from the UK Government and cannot envisage circumstances where such action would be necessary. HSBC has long been one of the world's most strongly capitalised banks and is committed to maintaining this position."

zerochlor You are not a socialist, you are a capitalist so why you keep harping on is quite baffling. Unfortunately, socialism doesn't work, communism doesn't work, and it seems now that capitalism in its current form is possibly unworkable. What that is leaves us with as an economic model has yet to be resolved but your blinkered one sided approach to the problem is never going to find the answer.

It would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a banker to pass through the gates of paradise.
