msg 6 German shepherds do not mature at 18 months..in fact, no dog matures at 18 months. Physical and mental maturity does not finish before 2.5-3 years with males...females do mature a lot younger. GSD's are a high drive working breed and they require plenty of physical activity and mental stimulation. I wouldn't recommend anyone taking on one of this dog unless they are physically fit to work with this dog on daily basis and have the time to do so.

someone meeting max at 1pm today with a view to rehoming him i hope it goes well i will post if max has a new family as soon as i know linda when working with Guide Dogs for the Blind in UK i was not given a German Shepard/ Alsation to train as i was told were still young untill 18months not like the retrivers or labs who were taken in to the center after 12 months of age they were given to very experianced trainers thats why i posted that info to let people know they need alot of attention

Lilli rehoming a strong, working breed dog is more than just finding a home to give it to. That 5 month old pup will grow up in no time and once his confidence develops he will show dominance to other dogs around him... Last thing you want around him is other male dogs!! Max won't be a cute puppy playing with the pointers or the lab when that day comes...

iceman as long as you train the dog properly and you are the pack leader any dog can be with any other dog - its whether they are trained correctly. Look at Ceaser Milans packs he has American pit bulls, rotties german shepherds ,all sorts together its all in the training and how you socialising them when young so it can be done

sienna never mind Cesar Millan TV Show...That is just a TV show and they only show you what they want you to see.. I would be interested to see him try his super techniques on an adult, male GSD rottweiler or a dobermann Besides...Cesar Millan is a professional dog trainer and he constantly warns people not to try his techniques at home. he seems to be an expert on chihuahuas and mongrels tho ... how much experience do YOU have with owning more than one dog of the same sex? (specially if one or both are from one of the above mentioned breeds)

Iceman, It seems to me you've had some bad experiences with this. Maybe you weren't the pack leader of your dogs and this caused some rank issues within. It's not all about the dogs ability to fit into the pack, it's also down to the pack leader to make sure the dog finds its place within the pack. Your comments on German Shepherds being high drive working breeds, if only they were. That was the intention of Max von Stephanitz but over the last century that working drive has just about vanished. To the extent that finding suitable dogs for service work, or sports such as schutzhund, is almost impossible. Even in Germany where strict breeding programs prevent weak nerved dogs from breeding, it is still difficult to find a dog with the working drive that the German Shepherds name was built on. If properly socialised as a puppy then a dog, just like Max, can easily fit into any pack as he will already have the social skills needed to interact with other pack members.

I know enough on dog psychology to know what happens when dogs of same sex try to establish dominance over each other.. Unless one submits to the other, trouble is inevitable.. No matter who you are or how much pack leader you think you are,you cannot be with them 24/7 to control the situation. They will find the time when you are not around to settle their differences & that's when they will rip into each other. anyway...enough with this thread..seems like there are enough dog experts on Cyprus44 without me butting in..
