At least six to twelve months ago the Belediyesi kindly cleared the area outside our house (2 big lorries and a digger) and placed this sign which I thought meant No rubbish to be dumped and we placed a sign in English And for those who do not read Turkish it says Don’t dump your rubbish here. But after having a friendly chat with a neighbour who informed me when I asked why she was placing her garden rubbish there as the Belediyesi had yet again sent around a lorry and digger the day before to clear it. As I pointed out it attracts other rubbish, I was informed it was the place for rubbish and it was ok as the stuff is biodegradable. Now we have a mattress, telly, gutter pipes and a biodegradable deck chair!. Before I go and clarify all this with the Belediyesi please can someone confirm the exact translation of the sign as maybe it is me that is wrong and she is right and I should of done my homework before moving in.

Also as we have approached the owner of the land to fence off the corner where the rubbish is placed I want to be certain what she said may happen will not happen - that with it fenced off the rubbish may be left outside our house as this area has been ‘the collecting point’ for years.

to put rubbish is forbidden (prohibited )

çöp - litter or rubbish

dökmek - the verb to pour, scatter or throw away

yasaktır - is prohibited or forbidden

so sorry your neighbour is wrong - and as you say it attracts all sorts of more rubbish - perhaps you need to speak to the beledeyesi about this problem

If your neighbours are Turkish, then they are pulling a fast one, but maybe they are from Mars and no speaka da turklish. Belediye is the way to go, but beware if the boss man is your neighbour's second cpousin! Guess who will win. How about a nice newspaper article ?? Name and shame? Yeni Duzen might like it or any, or all of the English language newspapers.

The meaning of the sign all depends on the definition of the word "cöp"

If it's cuttings from a tree/hedge/grass or even leaves, it might not be classified as "cöp"

As stated above "Çöp" is litter/rubbish

slightly off thread - does anyone know if there is a charge for the collection of garden refuse (Catalkoy) and if so how much it is ? Or does is it included in rates/council tax payment ? Sometimes we get a bill (40TL per house where there is garden refuse outside) for the collection and sometimes we don't !!!

Oh no not Turkish - They thanked us for getting the field cleared which is owned by a Cypriot. Most of our neighbours are Turkish or Cypriot and if they do place rubbish there and not in their own driveways they do arrange for it to be taken away. As this person said most of them work for the Belediyesi so its easy for them but I do not work for them and work in the area maintaining gardens etc and have made arrangements for the lorry to collect the garden waste and yes a small cost if a large amount is added to the water bill but pennies compared to the hassle of trying to legally dispose of it yourself. In Bellapais as rubbish is not allowed to be stored on the streets I have to store in the gardens and arrange collection and then have to transport it to their lorry. Unfortunately rubbish always attracts more and we notice people from up the mountain pull up as soon as they see a pile and unload their cars. Looks like another trip to the belediyesi and a fence to be erected. Thanks f

I think i have answered your question the2ofus, yes Catalkoy do charge but it does depend on size etc but its very reasonable and like you say sometimes it disappears for free. You can always check with them as the Yellow lorry does put the invoices it at the office.

You need to get someone to add 'or I'll use your driveway as a rubbish tip' in Turkish.

çöp burada dökmek yasaktır

yoksa senin bahçede çöp döğeceğim

although that might really p??s off your neighbour !!!

.Thanks Airy------fairy but I gather from others who live around I need a German translation - the neighbour's nephew behind us and the one to the right have spoken to the new Mayor, he arranged for the last truck and digger. I wouldn't mind if they said every Friday the yellow lorry is coming around and Thursday night a pile is left but it is so depressing to see the lorry and digger come and within 12 hours its all back again and we have to wait another week for it to be cleared

What it should have said was "Lutfen rubishinigizi buraya atmayinz". Then every one even the bloomin cat would understand that.

Hope you soon find a solution to what is a problem for many of us. We only have a "Dead End . Private Road " sign in English and Turkish as my Wildebeest (bless her) would not let me erect one stating "Allah and the Lord forgive those who tresspass and leave rubbish, we shoot the b......s". Evidently I could not spell b.......s. Any polite conversation with the Belediyesi is probably beyond me as their Rubbish Truck driver has crushed no less than 3 of our dustbins on collection days and the 3 new replacements were stolen, again on collection days. Perhaps I should not jump to conclusions, it is perhaps only coincidence !

The Daily Star is doing lots of articles about "Rubbish" , front page today was the disgusting sight at the big picnic area by Bogaz, people eat and leave their rubbish, on the same note, they also showed the rubbish bins all overflowing.

So it seems the belediye is not doing their bit either.

I agree with message 7. take a photo of the rubbish make sure the sign is visible too and send it to the Star paper..
