Russian premier Vladimir Putin has ordered a halt to all exports of

wheat and other grains from August 15, raising the stakes dramatically

in the crisis over wheat supplies. "This is very serious," said

Abdolreza Abbassanian, chief grain economist at the UN Food and

Agriculture Organization. "It's a desperate situation because it has

caught everybody off guard. We're not facing the situation of two years

ago but there is a risk of destabilising panic," the Telegraph reports

I don't remember the situation 2 years ago, so it can't be that bad......

I am sure I was reading the other day that wheat production has been sound this year, in fact the UK has increased it's yield by something like 7%. Perhaps I read it wrongly.

Russia have had a bad wheat crop so will be keeping most of their crop for home consumption. But the good news is the European crop had been underestimated last month so it looks like a bumper crop there...

Food prices are bound to go up, as a lot of the crop has already been forward bought by countries that have the dosh.....

Per head of population, I understand that Turkey is the biggest consumer of bread in the world. This also applies to Yoghurt.

I'm not sure about family sized bottles of Coke, though.

Russia are protecting their assets quite correctly because large parts of the country is on fire at the moment.

It would be crass stupidity to sell wheat on the world market when they do not know what damage has been done and is still happening to their crops. Werll done for forward planning Mr Putin.

You are right Dave. I would encourage Putin to stay open and informative about the impact. He does not want his actions to be viewed purely as an act of protectionism. Russia may be viewed as an unreliable trading partner. Much damage has been done over its oil and gas.

I believe that Turkey and Bulgaria (the breadbasket of Europe) produce all the grain they need. The TRNC produces quite a lot of grain on the plain the other side of the mountains.

marisa.

we are analysing the situation to ascertain if there may be any affect in TRNC. Russia has made a decision that probably will not directly cause any impact on TRNC however panic buying on world markets may drive up prices in panic buying.

So far you are the one that has made no input to the debate!!!!!!! Excepting cooper of course that always has his own slant on things!! lol

Being Russian (as I believe Marisa is) I think you've touched a raw nerve David.

Marisa, what is your view of the Russian grain harvest and its distribution?

More cynical than that. Will those who trade in grain, jump on the bandwagon of price increases, even if their business in unaffected by the situation in Russia ?

Does anybody know how many countries are dependent on Russia for their grain and which countries? Just curious

even with this summer situation in Russia-drought -the grain harvest is better than last year(acccording to Putin).

You know Russia is a vast country and if in one part we have a disaster like dought it does not mean it affects the whole country.

I do not think it affects foreign partners as well

but I agree with deputydawg

Are you saying there are no grain shortages? If there are none, why is Putin halting exports?

I think Putin likes to try and hype up any commodity Russia has - he did the same when oil was peaking.

Good bit of drama always keeps the peasants occupied, and stops them looking at other things..... (remember bird flu and the financial crisis here?)

More cynicism. Grains are an essential ingredient of Vodka and Putin will not export what brings him the popularity votes of the p..sheads !
