Tongue piercings 'can cause damage to teeth'

Piercings have also been associated with haemorrhages, infections, trauma to the gums and, in the worst cases, brain abscesses.

So what possible benefits, apart from the ensuing speech impediment, do you think tongue piercing bestows on the wearer?

I know I'm an old fogey and don't understand the young's need to be different... but there's different and then there's daft....

As another old fogey I couldn't agree more. Maybe it's a cry for attention! I'm sure some non fogey will put us right.

Come on guys didn't you do things in your youth that your parents disagreed with, just to be different e.g. long hair crazy clothes tattoos!

Crickey I remember my dad having a fit when I was going out with false eyelashes on and a skirt that left nothing to the imagination!

I would like to make a suggestion:

Get your tongue pierced....and ask your wife about the benefits......(this is meant as 'tongue in cheek')

Long hair, crazy clothes are not quite in the same league as permanent impairment of some physical aspect of your body... The long-term effects of tongue piercing are simply not worth the risk and for what? I have a niece who has one and she used to have a lovely speaking voice - not any longer, now she has a lisp and it sounds awful.

I may be square but tattoos were never on the list of things I felt inclined to have... maybe because even then, in the sixties and seventies, the greyish green blemishes of age-faded tattoos were in evidence amongst the older generations - so it would hardly seem rebellious.

No thanks...

Apart from being a fashion statement I think it's meant to give pleasure.

With regards the tongue, my teeth & gums are fine, speech was unaffected & girl friend was sad that I swallowed it !!!! and I think my brain is in tact.

* No it's not - and YOU know it!

For the curious and 'uninitiated', there are oodles of websites that'll tell you about the REAL benefits!

One of the REAL benefits is beautifully extolled by our favourite Australian bard:
