Its a real problem sometimes with outdoor dining. I try and encourage them away by leaving a piece of melon near the table but not on the table if you see what I mean. A kind of bribe to stay away from me. Success depend upon the level of belligerency of the wasps

I've read that if you kill a wasp other wasps pick up the scent and swarm around you. Don't know if it's true as I don't kill them.

OK - How to keep flies and wasps away from the dining table:

1./ Depending on the size of the table, take one, or more, drinking glasses and place strategically around the table.

2./ Take the same number of paper serviettes and place in the glasses.

3./ Then spray the paper serviettes [in the glasses] with fly spray, or preferably the stronger cockroach spray.

You will be surprised how effective this method is - and don't forget a 'Kiwi' told you 'how to'!!!

It's called 'Kiwi Ingenuity'!!!

Chop up an onion and put it on a plate on your table - it works a treat

.......................Or, don't worry about a few little friendly wasps - they won't eat or drink much!

I once read on this forum to swab down the table with listerene mouth wash prior to setting it. it is supposed to keep every flying insect away.

I read somewhere that you should 'blow' directly at a wasp and if will go away. The worst thing you can do us to try and hit it either with your hand or something else.

No.1 (msge.9) Wonder if that works only if the 'blower' suffers from pungent halitosis ?? lol

Usually something sweet (solid or liquid) seems to tempt them away, but wasps/hornets also like meat.

No1... what if you have a cold or throat infection, will that affect the wasp?

Blackbird. I never thought of that. Wouldn't want to pass a cold onto a wasp )

You can now buy a fake wasps nest and no wasps will come near it as they keep clear of other wasps nests!!

Swannee. It's probably the halitosis that kills the wasps. )

My neighbour has a small plastic bat about the size of a table tennis bat which is electrical (I believe batteries). He does not swipe at the flies/wasps, simply holds the bat up, and when they settle on it they are instantly zapped ie it is like a small version of the electric bulb thingies seen in some food stores. It is effective enough to instantly kill bees but he chooses to spare them. It came from UK but I do not know the source. I doubt it is expensive. If anyone wants details I can ask him and post his reply. For myself and me horse, when we eat on the patio, I simply leave a bucket of dung in the hallway except when my big brother joins us as the bucket is then rendered superfluous (attempt at a crap joke but you aint met me big bruvver whose shortened nickname in the family is Denzil, Methane, Gutbucket ) !

Agree, the battery-operated bat is great.
