Hi,

I know there has been similar on here before, but can somebody Please refresh my mind and rules etc on bringing a second hand car into the country. We have a Volkswagon Polo, 1400cc. 2006 plate but registered in 2007. Just paid about £5000 (Grand) for it in England.

If i shipped it over, besides shipping fee's etc, would i be allowed to keep it in North Cyprus? How much in fees, duty & taxes would i be liable to have to pay?

Thanks in advance.

It is over 3 years of age,if not been in your name from new you cant import it.Unless they do another amnesty like last year you have no chance. However, you can bring it to Cyprus and keep it here for 13 months max.If you decide to do that,do please make sure the car has full years road tax as it is valid here and also cheaper in uk then here.

I was told about the 13 month rule but do not understand how it works? What procedures do you have to carry out to get your car in country? Do you have to register it somewhere on arrival?

You'll get 30 days/1 month permit on arrival, and 2 lots of 6 months extentions after. However, the car must either be registered/duties paid after that period or taken out of the country.

You can keep your car with uk plates in that period also.

ps.If you decide to do that do please also get years green card as it is a much cheaper way to cross over to "BORDER" to visit our 'friends'.

Thanks for that. Is their any way they wouldn't extend for the 2 x 6 months period. Where do you get the permit and the extentions? What's the green card? Sorry just arrived a couple of weeks ago and am still finding my feet

They wilkl try to make you import it asap as they'd like to take your money sooner rather then later. But,if need be just tell them that your money has not arrived yet and you will after next period.

Permit is gained, first one as it enters at the horbour, and customs office in Nocosia after.

Green card is http://www.theaa.com/services/insuranceandfinance/car_renewals/driving_abroad.html

It would be for the porpuse of crossing to south without any hussle and also it is cheaper.

here is a number if you need any urgent help:0533 873 9181

Oddjob,

Sorry, I've just realised I've changed the thread of your post. I'm in the same position as you with a 2005 Peogeot that I want to bring but don't want to pay for the car again!!

We have just been to sort our car out having had it here for nearly 1 year. The girls in custom have always been really helpful to us. So it is exactly how it is said on this thread.

1) drive over from UK

2) go to customs within 1 month

3) they will give you 6 months

4) Our UK road tax ran out so we had to tax here (make sure you have 1 years tax on, more expensive here)

5) go back before the date ends on your stamp (on your documents, they stamp it)

6) They will then give you another 6 months.

7) We arrived at Girne on the 19th August last year had to back for final valuation by the 5th August this year

8) It is a 2006 car valued at £4300 weighs 1450 kgs and has a 1.6 engine an EU car and the valuation is not cheap 2500 YTL + $2000 = £2300 approx

We paid £5000 for the car in Feb 2009, but would dread to think how much it would cost here

Also going to the other side is a nightmare on British plates. The Greeks are horrible to you.

I believe you can carry on paying the road tax etc; if you push it but to be honest the duty may go up even more, so we think it is better to 'get it over with'.

So if you have a good car with low mileage and you have to add another £2500 approx onto it(if similar value to ours) see how much it would cost here to purchase a similar car here then..... make your comparison

By the way Non Eu cars are more expensive when it comes to duty. So if it is Japanese etc, it will be a lot higher
