Reading the Cyprus Mail in Aug 4th the disabled athletes will not be able to fly the flag for their country because it is not reconised, in the olympic games, by the international paralympic commitee... i think this is a disgrase as there should be no barriers in sport..... now....this what i cannot understand...in the same paper, the EUROPEON UNION is spending 6.3 million euros on the DIKMAN WASTE SITE and another 19.5 million euros in management. the site is at gungor north of lefksoa (is this site in the T.R.N.C. or have i got it wrrong). so... if this a non reconised country why are the E.U. spending all this money..... am i missing something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that the short answer is that the "international paralympic committee" and the "EUROPEAN UNION" are two separate bodies, with different criteria. Come to that, the EU doesn't recognise TRNC, any more than ROC does - but they choose to deal with it pragmatically on some day-to-day matters - I think that the "international paralympic committee" has probably been 'nobbled' (succumbed to Greek / ROC pressure and misinformation...)

roc is in control of Cyprus according to the world sporting bodies world wide IOC FA etc . So Luton Town trained in the TRNC three years ago and were threatened with sanctions by the FA because the roc fa complained so no match A player born in the TRNC can play for not the TRNC roc of GB if he has a British passport Kasmin Richards The works done by the eu are part of the cost for the roc being" in charge " of the island so if the do not improve things in the as they call it "occupied areas" with eu money they would not get any part of the Annan pay off

With regard to the EU putting money in to "green" waste sites. This happened to us over near Larnaca and our community charge has gone up 90% this year to pay for it. Beware!!

It's Apples and Pears I,m afraid. The position is that International sporting bodies follow the worldpolitical line on Cyprus, i.e that there is no state of The TRNC and the area in the North is under Turkish occupation. There is only one national government in Cyprus and therefore only one FA, Olympic association etc. etc. (As an aside I assume that if the right situation arose a TRNC athlete could represent the ROC, a guess on my part). In allowing Cyprus admission to the EU the whole Island was admitted. This accession was allowed despite the resounding no to the referendum on the Annan plan by those in the south. The Eu however determined to to give infrastructure support to the areas in the North, partly it is said as a reward for the yes vote in the North. Initiially this was held up by ROC insistence that they control the funding of projects in the North. This was a logical non sequitur, the ROc claimed it did not control the areas so how could it control the spending.
