Am I correct thinking that there are Brits living in the north other then those who vacation there? I do remember back in the '50's that there were some retirees and also Lawrence Durrell , who wrote the great book "Bitter Lemons" and he lived in Bella Pais while working for the Govt. in Nicosia. Wonder if the "Tree of Idleness" is still there in the plaza where I took a beer and some lunch one day?

| msg 5 "This post is clearly a windup... " how exactly do you come to that conclusion Dee? This is an elderly gentleman who lives in California, obviously spent some time here in the 50s (presumably ex serviceman) enquiring about TRNC. Which part of his post has wound you up? Excomo (Charles) welcome to out forum - Yes there are quite a number of expat brits out here - mostly great, friendly folk enjoying the beauty of this part of the island - a few, cynical, pessimistic folk who's cup is always half empty - but we try not to let them drag us down! | Deecyprus4, My empathic abilities tell me Charles is a Christian and is real. Connected with California and Hawaii ... and the sea ... I see the numbers 1931, the name Elmendorf and the year 1950 ... I am sure that he will confirm this. Charles, come across and enjoy the visit! |

Hi excommo, If you or anyone you know is looking to get back to northern Cyprus and perhaps buy a place here, pop along to Golden Cyprus and http://www.goldencyprus.co.uk, we may just be able to help out... Btw, I'm told that there are two contenders for the title of "Tree of Idleness". One is a mulberry tree by the coffee shop, the other is a nearby Japanese pagoda tree near the Huzur Agac (Tree of Idleness) Restaurant. Best Golden Cyprus

Yes I was posted Nicosia with the U.S. Consulate General 56-57. My query re visitng there is for an old friend who served with me then who is from Iceland and now a widower and was thinking of putting up for a couple months this winter in Kyrenia. Assume he will want a modest priced hotel. He is not too swift on computers so i am doing the initial inquiries.. The other references apparently have to do with my service in the USAF in the Korean War in Alaska.. My father went to sea for 30 years and then ended up with a great shore job. We lived in Honolulu 1937-39. Thanks for the answers and not familiar with expression windup? I live in Santa Rosa, Calif. and am 78 years old. The friend is 91..

i will also share my story on this web site at the bottom of the Cyprus sub link . Has my real name that I used there and will continue to use my alias on this forum. I worked on that some time with the link editor, David Carter, shortly before he died. David was a young RA officer on the island during my time.. http://www.britains-smallwars.com/cyprus/index.html

Hi Charles, " I bought an MG sports car ... and used to like taking corners at speed. " " The walled city was full of temptations ... but had scores of attractive women, for single Americans to date." Sounds to me like you were a bit of the playboy about town I hope your friend enjoys himself as much as you did ... he'd better watch out for the new speed cameras though Crumpy

I was young and nuts and some what of an hedonist. My friend , i don't know his night time activities back then as he lived in the Cleopatra Hotel in Nico and i lived out in Ayios Demetrios and played out in that area at night, we all did hang out often during the day at the Chez Nous bar just outside the Ledra Gate. Bunch of French paratroopers (10th ParaDiv) from Tatoi air base during the Suez War times use to crowd the place also at times. Obviously things were much different then now back that far. I will pass all I have learned to the friend and see what he does about it this winter..

Blimey I have been well and truly 'told off' by the great and the good lol..... When I read the headline my immediate thought was how could anyone ask such a silly question...surely every one has access to a computer, this gentleman is clearly genuine and my apology to him. Maggie and Bernie, well what can I say lol.
