I have read the article and I have to agree, the only thing I would add is 'sort out the cruelty to animals, esp dogs but all animals'. that would also encourage more tourists to give favourable reports.

Metin Murat 'puts it in a nutshell', but failed to comment on the insidiously increasing 'Turkification' of TRNC and the continuing failure of the government to address the lawless 'legal' system besetting and beleaguring foreign homebuyers, past or present, or potential investors.

He believes in eventual unification with RoC - how does he come to terms with the fact that the Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church are adamant that this will never happen and continue to do their level best to ensure that successive generations of GC's are brainwashed with anti-Turkish sentiment - indeed, increasingly alarming vehemence - from cradle to grave?

When the bitter 'ingredient' of xenophobia is added to this 'witches' cauldron of hatred', it is hardly a panacea for 'multicultural unification'?

While the 'powers that be', North & South, continue to cosset themselves in their endemic national bigotry, there can never be salvation for the island of Cyprus.

The problem is in this age of instant gratification people want instant solutions. He is talking about a generation to sort things out - which is a sensible time scale. OK some things could be done more quickly but cutting MIP's and so on, is going to take time - cant you see it - striking MP's when they think they will be losing their jobs. Certainly if Plan B that is talked about is Turkey taking the north over as another province it will mean a wholesale leaving of many "Turkish" Cypriots who certainly do not want to be part of Turkey, who they blame for most of the ills - closure of original businesses, running down of agriculture, original "embargoes" etc etc. If they go, who will be left? An aging population of Brits and others hanging grimly on to their hardwon plots and villas??

Excellent article from Metin.

Wonder when we will get the usual refrain of 'if you dont like it you shouldnt stay here' from the some smug expat.

But dont be glum ,its been a week, so for those that need it, we are due for another '150 reasons why this is the best place in the world to buy a villa (only nice positive answers wanted)' thread, to counter Metins article

very good article.

At the end of the day it may only be the parent who can sort out the child. The parent being Turkey. If the child keeps taking the sweets for granted without earning those sweets through graft and craft then the childrens growth is going to be stunted and they are not going to develop.

The parent needs the child to be more autonomous and resilient but what is the parents intention. Does it want the TRNC to become part of Turkey or does it want the child to leave home and find a solution with the ROC?

The author is concerned that the North wont have any power in any negotiations. Its a point extremely well made. If Turkey is indeed building a water and electricity pipeline, this may not only reveal Turkeys true intention, but it will certainly give the North much more negotiating power. Water has to be the most precious resource in Cyprus.

Great 'no holds barred' article.

It would be interesting to ascertain what proportion of the 250,000 inhabitants are Ex-pats. Also how much the ex-pats put into the trnc economy every year.

newlad/msg 20:

For instance:

The Home Buyers' Pressure Group, have already offered *government, 'on a plate', the panacea to the problems of the construction industry and the legal system.

To date, their sound (free!) advice has fallen on deaf ears.

50 MP's, and not one is interested?

As Pauline Read's words constantly remind us: 'You couldn't make it up!'

Now *they're going to set up some sort of 'think tank'.

I take my hat off to Marian Stokes for her tireless and ongoing efforts............
