If you're squeamish, don't read the rest of this post! Last night I was out without my insect repellant (the night crept up quickly!). Anyway this morning I found a few more bites as normal, many that look like sandfly bites but one strange one on my wrist. I have a little red lump that doesn't really itch much but is sore to touch and feels like it's bruised, with a black dot in the middle, about 2mm dia. I thought it looked like a blackhead at first, though it's not something I've ever had so wasn't sure. I tried squeezing and some clear puss came out. I tried prodding with pointed tweezers but couldn't get hold of it to pull it out. It feels hard. Has anyone had a similar thing or any ideas what to do? Thanks.

Pippie - sorry to hear this - sounds horrible! I'm no expert (far from it) but could it be a spider bite? My son got one a couple of years ago in Australia and the description sounds similar. I hope not - although he suffered no ill-effects, apart from a small scar that remains. Jean

| If you look at it under a magnifying glass you may see its legs moving. So if its a live insect that is almost totally into your skin, its best not to try to pull it out but go to a doctor immediately to have it removed in one piece. Otherwise its poison will remain inside and give you much trouble. we had something similar last year. I tried to remove it with no success. Then my daughter had a look with much better eyesight and she realized that it was moving!!! | Blimey, I hope not. I was hoping someone might say "put a bread poultis on and it'll be ok!" Mind you, in Mexico one year trudging through the jungle I looked down to see an ant trying to bury it's head in my leg! We can't see anything so if it's still hurting tomorrow I'll go to the docs. |

Thanks Ismet. It's been like this since I woke up. Do you think it'll wait until tomorrow to go to see a doc or do think I need to go to casualty?

Just got back from Girne hospital. In and out in 10 minutes, surrounded by 4 nurses and a doctor, they didn't really look too closely, the doc took one look and just said insect bite. He's given me a prescription to pick up tomorrow and said it's nothing to worry about. Best still it didn't cost a penny! If he's right, panic over. But thanks for the advice Ismet, always better to be careful I agree.

There has been a few deaths in Turkey in the last couple of years due to these insect bites. so its best to look at them closely ans see if there is anything moving. Ah well, all is well that ends well. ismet

Well the redness has gone down somewhat today though there's still a little lump which is a little sore. The black dot in the middle is more of a concave hole now but I don't think it's any bigger. We'll see how it goes. I'll let you know if I have to have my hand amputated!!!!

Cooper, never thought of that, 2 lumps, 2 dots , 2 bruises, not going there with the puss.

If a tick fastens itself onto you, your dog, or cat - put a few drops of acetone [nail polish remover] on it - that'll make it pull its head in! Always do this BEFORE trying to pull it off with tweezers, or whatever - otherwise the head will stay buried under the skin, which will soon cause further problems, like blood poisoning.
