Loucas Charalambos is one of the few commentators in the RoC who has the foresight and the courage to voice what we in the North have known ever since the '94 Annan Plan referendum - the only practical solution is partition. The world is growing weary of the Greek Cypriot posturing as the eternal victim of a bully off the northern coast, and is waking up to the fact that it's not the TCs who are being intransigent. They are only now realising that they will never own the whole island and be able to ally it to the motherland in Greece, and are now considering ways of minimising the damage to their position at the negotiating table. At the end of this year everyone will give up on the talks, and only then will the serious decisions be made. Will the TRNC become Turkey's newest state? It seems the most logical solution. Only when the grass-roots hatred of the two communities decays will there be any chance of an amicable union.

Sorry, slip of the keyboard. I did of course mean '04 rather than '94. But is that your only comment on what is a rather serious topic?

What an interesting article. TRNC's negotiating position has not only improved because the GCs are widely considered to be the awkward party to the talks but because Turkey has emerged as an economic and politilal regional power whilst the Greeks are economic paupers. Europe and the West needs Turkey: sadly, Greece is third division and politically insignificant. I cannot see that the GCs would tolerate their Government making the necessary concessions to TRNC so the talks are unlikely to result in a settlement which will ultimately be imposed by TRNC/Turkey.

The author said "And his motives were very dubious. On the one hand, he was not in a hurry to sign a deal because he wanted to enjoy his time as president, while on the other he did not want to lose the support of DIKO and EDEK for the sake of a settlement. How else would he have secured another term?" This would be impossible to prove, however, it if it is correct, then in years to come Christofias might find it hard to sleep at night, as he may have put his own interests before the welfare of those who live on the whole island. In his defence, I think the Cyprus issue is a very difficult matter to solve for anybody

If you were the GCs, you would have voted NO to annan too.... You have full control of the only legally recognised government on the Island, you have UN, EU and membership to any International organisation that you want, you have control of the only airports with direct flights from anywhere in the world... Even the TCs go and spend their money over their as they have things that can not be operating in the North, and they get significant revenues profits from these activaties... So why would they vote yes and share it all? They're doing well on their own... Voting No has bought little/no downside to them, afterall they were rewarded with FULL EU membership for the ROC the miniute the referendum results were in whilst the TRNC were shunned.

re msg 9 It isn't hard to prove.. he told his party supporters to vote NO to Annan - 'that the No meant Yes' - DIKO got Tassos as President in return for his party's support to keep out DISY ( the party of the right - who ironically were PRO Annan )
