Can I apply for a TRNC driving license without residency or a work permit?

I am just using the 90 day visa at the moment and coming in and out of the country every couple of months. The problem is that I have to send my UK license away within the next 4 weeks to get endorsed because I got caught speeding one too many times and I reached the 12 point limit. So basically I'm trying to figure out how to get my TRNC license before I lose my UK one.

If you accidentally lost your uk licence, then they would issue you a replacement with the endorsement on it

Not to worry, you'd soon have reached the limit in TRNC as well - there's speed cameras all over the place, and they're on 'hair trigger' settings!

Take a taxi, and let them get the points...

Deniz1,

That's a new one on me!

You learn something new every day...

Why would he only be able to get a TRNC licence for 1 year?

nikeboy,

Quick tip from experience - if you're intention is to get a TRNC licence so that you can drive with this in the UK whilst on the ban, then it wont work.

Uk police will check the name on your TRNC licence on UK databases and your ban will show up.

However, the ONLY way around this is to make the name on your TRNC licence different from the name on your UK licence. E.g. if your name is Mehmet Mustafa, make it Mehmet Yilmaz on your TRNC licence - not very easy, but is much better than not being able to drive for 6 months!!!!

Deniz1,

Right, I'm with you now - I'm just being a bit thick today

Actually, I didn't realise that you could get even a 1 year licence on a 90 day Visa - I thought that the Rationale was that you could drive for 90 days on your Foreign licence, which would generally be sufficient, as that is the length of time that your Visa would last...

Interesting!

Thanks for the info.

question when buying a car can you put several names on the registration, seems thats the only way to stop collecting all your family points on your license

My daughter in sept 08 got a speeding fine this came to my attention when I landed at Erzan in may this year I was told to report to the police and was fined 180 lira and i was'nt the driver but as I am the owner of the car I was the one that got touched!

Hello all

Thanks for your responses. It's actually me who is the speeder but I was logged in as my other half when I posted my question hence the nike"boy" !!

Well I phoned Penrith court today and they said I could fax them and tell them that I didnt know about the court case because I live over here and didn't see the letters. They have agreed to rescind the judgement and set a new date for another hearing and I'll be able to go and represent myself and get a lower fine and less points. Good news

canyavuz - I had intended to try and drive in UK with a TRNC license so I'm glad you told me about the police check thing! At least I know in case the next court hearing doesn't go well!

kavenkoy - did some research on totting up. apparently points stay on your license for 4 years but totting up only takes into account points that you got within the last 3 years. interesting.

keithcaley - if all else fails then I will photocopy my license before I have to give it back to DVLA and I can just try and tell the police that I'm here on holiday and "forgot" my license so someone faxed me over a copy
