I do apologise, it's very late, Message 5 to the Moronic One, should read as follows: "I'm so happy you've LOST nothing, etc.................................. Although, I suppose the original would have read OK. Oh, and by the way, just a small point here, but just as well to remember for the future, the word 'restaurant' means restaurant singular. The word 'restaurants' means restaurants plural. 'Restaurant's 'means neither. I don't know, you youngsters with your university educations!

Well Lili that is a very sweeping statement that you hate all Turkish wines if you were to try some of the wines from Bozcaada Capadocia and even Murefttee i think you will find that they are superior to some of the Italian plonk. Ii take Barolo out of the equation however as this is my very very favourite. Granted these wines are expensive but that is down to the taxation.

HI HIPPO, you are so correct, i need to broaden my outlook on turkish wines but i only have tried the usual ones we get here. Thank you for telling me about these others. Now Barolo thats another matter. One of our favourites also.

As far as I can see there is no additional levy on alcohol here above the usual VAT (KDV). Whereas, throughout most of Europe in addition to VAT there is a tax levy. However lets give this new Gov't a chance to load a bullet and stick their foot into a position that will enable said bullet to do as much damage as they can possibly achieve in one shot:( I know they could cross them and shoot themselves in both!

Good morning Lilli , Re : msg 3 - "We went to Istanbul 2 years ago and paid 13tl for a glass of Çankaya" - Unfortunately Lilli, in Istanbul, even in the cheapest all-male dingy birahanes, you can expect to pay 4TL for a beer and you'd be paying 12TL for a beer in the more posey North Shields' bars ... but unfortunately my fiance feels more comfortable in bars like the North Shields :- ( Re : msg 8 - "I need to broaden my outlook on Turkish wines" - Fair enough Lilli and in doing so you'd be doing your bit to support the Turkish economy, but I really do recommend the Greek wine that my fiance's Father buys in the south. The brand is Keo and he tells me he buys the cartons (both red and white) at Debenhams on Ledra Street ... and that in fact they only cost 1.80 a carton, not 2, as I wrote in message 1.

The variation and price of wine here has improved greatly over the last few years especially with the importation of South African wines. Illeli sell a 5 litre box of a blended red for31 tl, that is cheap drinking. Beware though it is 14 %

In the 1970s, wine served in restaurants, tavernas, etc, with meals was free and as much as one could drink. Usually it was a large flagon of "Cockanelli" (spelling?) placed mid table and replaced as necessary ! A 3 course meal for our family with 5 children would total £5 cypriot. The wine was awful but potent. The vines would get stuck in the throat unless non stop drinking ensued. The Cockanelli was so plentiful that there were more lorries carrying the grapes than today's tankers with water. As lorries climbed hills the grapes would crush themselves against tailboards spewing wine all over the roads which displayed numerous signs warning of skid pan conditions for drivers. Drunken drivers could then genuinely steer as well or no worse than the sober. Those were the days !

Oh Jeanieeee "Oh, and by the way, just a small point here, but just as well to remember for the future, the word 'restaurant' means restaurant singular. The word 'restaurants' means restaurants plural. 'Restaurant's 'means neither". That's correct and correct it is! How are youuuuu. It's been a while. Must do a catch up. Give my best to SIMBAS for me. Can't believe I missed her birthday. Fancy that, her being 60. It's a great age 60. Can't wait till I'm 60. Such a long time off though my 60th. Give her my best wishes, I know how very close you are.

Thanks for the story DeputyDawg - I am imagining the road signs - "Drive with care - wine on road" ! My fiance's Father is also not certain as to the spelling of Kokkinelly (that's his best attempt though) ... he reckons one can still buy a bottle of it for about 4 in the south ... he says it's not that bad ... a bit on the sweet side though ...

Kokkinelli, is still available in demi jons for around 9 euro. As you say those were the days, The Britannia, Niazis when it was really good, Old romantic, New romantic, Arifs etc. all had the same food. I always winced at the first glass of kokkineli but after the third glass you didn't care cos your tongue was going numb. I remember the signs reading beware grape juice on road.
