I'm considering leasing a property in Karmi and would love to hear from other expats who currently live there.

I'm presently weighing up the pro's and con's of relocating to Northern Cyprus and as it is such a big step would love to chat with others who have made that move.

I'm widowed and unless one of my adult sons decides to move with me, would be relocating alone.

I would be interested to know of costs related to living in Karmi. For example, electricity, phone, broadband, tv etc

What are the bars/restaurants like in the village? Are they all trading?

I'm a little concerned about receiving mail, as I've been told that there isn't a mail delivery service in Northern Cyprus. How do people get their mail? Does it get delivered to the local Karmi shop/post office, or do I need to go further afield?

Would love to hear from any Karmi residents who can offer advice on anything which might make my relocation easier, especially from any other singles.

Pretty as it is, Karmi is rather gloomy in winter : permanent shadow from the mountains.

no i dont run the pub thats steve and suzzane its my local, and there making a great job of it or so my wallet tells me after a few in there

as for the person who is thinking of buying here, i really dont one visit is enough to make me spend x thousands of pounds you need to know the place as you would in the uk, from my point of view am glad that i moved here but i was here loads of times first and i was only moving from turkey not doing the BIG move from the UK, yes winters are cloudy but its also a lot cooler in the summer then down below

but its each to there own as to what they do in life

RE msg 5, No1Doyen: (...) I quite like Karmi. (...)

=> Karmi by the way is officially called Karaman by the government of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Sunday visitors from the South however may tell you differently.

P.S. Karmi - in the Middle Ages - used to be the property of the Carmelite order. Just for the record.

I wondered why the TRNC Government decided to lease most of the properties rather than sell in this particular area?

It really bugs me when people make assumptions about others.....................

Andrew, I don't remember saying anywhere that I've only been there once. This looks a little to me like male chauvanism.......... Some men seem to have a problem understanding that women aren't stupid, and quite capable of making informed decisions about major changes in their lives.

But then, there will always be those men afraid of intelligent women and openly show it through the stupid comments they make.

The houses in Karmi were to leased to foreigners in the 70s. The deal was that they renovated the houses which were then ruins.

I meant to say Mystery that Karmi is lovely. It doesn't suffer from all the overbuilding going on elsewhere.

Cool in summer, cosy in winter. And quiet. But you do need a car.

very quaint up there, prob one of the best bits of the Girne area.....

Downsides - bit of a treck to get up there (then again, its so nice up there, you wouldn't want to leave that often) and a bit damp and gloomy in winter (then again, it adds to the ambiance and you can always light a fire and snug up in front of the tellie).

All in all - an excellent choice.....

Lets hope the Mongers don't hear about it and spoil it for everyone...

I'd agree with that.

Many who have lived in Karmi, say it is very cold in the winter. Because of the location of the village, high up & under the edge of the mountains, it receives very little sun in the middle of winter. Cooler it may be in the summer, but it is very cold in the winter. If you are thinking about a move to the village involving a long lease & you have any issues with feeling cold, then I would seriously suggest you check out this aspect first.

If you lucky enough to have CH there, then it will cost you megabucks to run it.

I wouldn't live anywhere else. It's cold, damp and miserable everywhere here in the winter, not just Karmi. I've never had 'central heating' in this part of the world (only istanbul because we had natural gas). I have a katalitik and if it's very cold I might light the fire if I have time. And in this heat at the moment it's lovely because the temperature is cooler by a couple of degrees. Karmi is not for everyone, thank God!

Thanks everyone. I can't imagine Karmi being as cold as the UK in winter. The house I'm looking at has an open fire and a wood burning stove, so should be quite cosy. I'm more worried about becoming a recluse, with moving over alone. So it would be great to make a few friends before I get there.

I'm hoping the Karmi community is as welcoming to newcomers as I've heard....

The people who live in Karmi are some of the nicest English people I have met on the island. You need never feel that you are alone as there are always people who care about you and will help you. Karmi is the place where you live but presumably you won't be spending 24 hours a day in the village. You will have your own life and friends ELSEWHERE but Karmi is an excellent place to have your home. Well that's how I feel!
