I have been watching the floods in Pakistan with interest, particularly how much aid they are receiving from the Western World. Not a lot I understand most of the aid which has been sent has been sent by the asians residing in the UK. I have my own ideas why this is but would be interested in other views. The butlers wife

Aid agencies have been pushing for more funding as they try to tackle major problems such as food supplies, lack of clean water and shelter and outbreaks of disease. More than 4 million people are homeless

Hundreds of villages are isolated, highways and bridges have been cut in half and hundreds of thousands of cattle -- the livelihoods of many villagers -- have drowned. Many hospitals and medical camps are overwhelmed and fears are rising for possible epidemics. Please donate.

Aid funding has improved, with nearly half the $459 million (295 million pounds) needed to fund initial relief efforts secured after days of lobbying donors. But the situation on the ground remained grim.

Hans. What are we supposed to do - sit back and do nothing? I've donated already and it didn't come into my head that the money may not go to the victims. It's a conscience thing.

Your right Bill, we should just give away money to whoever asks for it because then in maybe 100 years ago they will have accumulated enough for any disaster that comes along. We come from a country that has written off half of the intrernational debts owed to them every time a country has trouble and then you are consciencous in your opinion, gullible in mine to give even more money to a country that will never change what happens. I suppose in many peoples eyes I am out of order and for that I am sorry for upsetting you but not for my opinion which is just different to yours. Every third wiorld country has problems and their own governments do nothing but when disaster strikes the charity organisations go nuts at everybody for not donating to help in a situation that was of its own making. How many people on here will not help TC's by buying they're products but will give money to a country which will never use it for the purpose intended ??

You are right Bill and I should ahve stayed silent but then I get really frustrated at people expecting charity all the time for what seems like a different thing every day. I prefer to chose how and what I would like to help with and don't like things being waved in my face as it always makes me feel like people are trying to make me feel guilty for not having done enough for their choice of charity. I re-read your post and see that you are asking people to donate but that in itself is what I am describing. As I said earlier, people will think I am out of order but I do not ask everyone to donate to the Muscular dystrophy foundation just because I believe it is a good idea. Now if you were to be asking people to help with charitable organisations for NC I would keep my typing fingers away, that would make sense on here but Pakistan, niot so much. Sorry for digging at you but I needed to vent. Apologies to all sensitivities

This is a very serious emergency, people are dying, many of whom are children, therefore we that give do not need lectures from those that don't. Do some people get a thrill of seeing others suffer? I can't believe you wanting to air your political views on a disaster appeal thread.

It may be a difference between naive people and realists (or people who have been around in this world). But, go ahead, donate - it's your money. But it may be interesting to check after 6-12 months what happened with your money.

teatime, you might not believe this but people are always dying in this country, especially children. I was not airing a political opinion and I don't think Dutch was either. You are right we should not comment on such an important item just because we believe the aid will never get to those who really need it, oh wait a minute, this is a forum not a charity web site, we can do what we bloody well want. Spider, I'm surprised at you, I am not talking about not thinking of others, I am talking about helping wehere it might actually achieve something instead of throwing money away. I have said my share for today, I will bugger off now and wait another month or so before I post again, it's better for my constitution and it stops people from getting too angry with me.

When you consider that 90p of every £1.00 sent to a charity organisation goes to the administration ie: Managers, Secretary's ets... Its not surprising that some of us would rather donate materials, I have donated two bin liners of clothes and household goods. Vicki

I am going to be controversial and say please do not send money to Pakistan but do please send material. My reason for not sending money is that besides only a very small proportion actually getting to Pakistan, what will get there will almost certainly go to the wrong people. I do not want money spent on arming the Taliban or on schools preaching hate to westeners. The butlers wife

I am going to be even more controversial and say that I am not, actually, sending anything (money-wise) to the poor, unfortunate country that is Pakiistan. We have had a heated debate in the office today about this; my colleague (who has plenty of money - but that is not really the point), has donated quite a large sum of money. Great - her choice. I pointed out to her that possibly only 10p in every £1.00 get to those who need it, fell on deaf ears. She remonstrated that she'd made her contribution via Oxfam and that made it utterley viable and that 'all the money' would go to the deserving. I know that politics, etc. shouldn't come into it, and in an "Ideal World" it wouldn't, but, sadly, this is not an ideal world. Like The Butlers Wife, do not want my money going into the Talibans's coffers, thank you - and a pound to a penny, that's where it will end up!

with all the pakistani restaurants on this island and all the very loyal customers they have there should be no need for us to donate. Im sure between all the restaurants they can be sure to raise a small fortune between themselves to send back to there brothers and sisters.

Sadly, however much is donated to Pakistan it will not be enough. Many of the homes, villages and towns that have been destroyed or affected by the floods are now on 'possible' flood plains. If they are rebuilt where they were, the same result will happen again (maybe next year?). When (not if) we start to have a sea level rise, many of the world's cities will need to be moved!

Anywhooo ~ their own president is sooooo concerned he is lording it around Europe being feted as a "Head of State" with banquets, following which more food will the thrown away than many of his people will see in a month. He is not alone. The Pakistani Information Minister is also in Europe, preceeding his President (presumably to make sure the beds are aired or summat). They have a 30+ man cricket squad playing happily in a series of test matches in the UK ) Haven't noticed any of them rushing home to help bale out. No ~ I'm sorry but if you live in a monsoon prone country and build your houses out of mud whilst building up enormous quantities of nuclear weapons, armed forces and throwing $$$$ millions in support to our enemies then you really do have a cheek asking us to help.

An interesting point I heard the other day. In New York, the Muslim community are planning on spending millions of dollars on building the Mosque/community centre near Ground Zero. Surely, if these people had Islam at heart, then they'd divert this money to help those in need in Pakistan. Somehow, I don't think they will... Surely, they would recognise that lives are more important than a fancy building? I guess not...

| If one desires to give donation, they should but if not come with rubbish and lame reasons to assuage their consciousnesss. I do not trust official dontation pionts either but there are various charities especially in the UK which make sure 100% donation reach their desination: some of these charities do not even take out a percentage for their administration costs. On a similar misinformation, whether through ignorance or deliberate ploy, it is claimed balntly "Pakistan spent $300 billion during 2008-2009 upgrading its defense capabilities". For your education, for that period Pakistans |Defence expenditure was 4.9 billion dollars 2.31% of GDP (india claims Pakistans expenditure is 9 Billion dollar). Even the apc2010, which planet are you coming from? |

The Platinium benchmark for military expeniture, relied on both by GOVERNMENTS and private individuals and organisations, are those provided by IISS of London and SIPRI of Sweden. Please go to their website. but just to wet your appetite you may care to go to http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/spending.htm Incidently, the figures you have lifted are from a comic magazine and explains the barmy figure. (incidently china's defence expenditure last year was 56 Billion dollars - perhaps you may have difficulties with large sums} I take strong exception to the post because such disinformation and misinformation misleads innocent people who may have second thoughts about donating money for good .

this is what YOUR iiss source says about Cyprus ( how many years ????) Though a major source of friction between Greece and Turkey, the conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots has been bloodless and somnolent, and therefore politically manageable, for 27 years. Now, however, its rising potential to impede European Union (EU) enlargement and increase tension between Greece and Turkey has made solving the problem much more urgent. Greece has made it increasingly plain that unless the Republic of Cyprus in its entirety is included in the first wave of EU expansion in 2004 – along with the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland – Athens would block the accession of the other countries. Turkey has countered that were Cyprus admitted to the EU absent a confederal arrangement between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots – whereby the TRNC would be recognised as a separate sovereign state – Turkey could annex the TRNC and force the issue of legal partition, and perhaps renounce Ankara's EU cand

kav, nothing to worry about, their Indian, Karalan, Sri-Lankan, Bangladeshy cousins would be able to cope with the shortfall, damn, just reread my post and sound like a complete bigot. I am so glad I read that before I posted, I might have come across as a racist.

| Well as I work in this area - i felt it not necessary to check all the sources you have listed because i know from "first hand" how much Pakistan spends (unwisely I may add) on defence. So i just checked out your other "comic" site of |Reutors - and lo and behold I was right earlier that you may have a problem with figures (no offence meant as every body has a weakness and many with figures). YOU SEE YOU HAVE QUOTED A FIGURE OF $300 BILLION (dollars). BUT EVEN YOUR SOURCES SAYS (WHAT i HAVE BEEN SAYING ALL THIS TIME, "342.9 billion rupees ($4.2 billion" IN DOLLARS). mY FRIEND, ALL THIS TIME YOU HAVE SEEN THE FIGURE OF 300 bILLION WITHOUT OBSORBING WHAT CURRENCY WE ARE TALKING ABOUT BUT YET YOU QUOTE IN DOLLARS THE FIGURE 300 BILLION!!! (WHICH IS NOT EVEN THE GDP OF PAKISTAN - THAT SHOULD HAVE RUNG ALARM BELLS FOR YOU). i TRUST YOU CONCEDE NOW AND THE MATTER CAN BE PUT TO REST!. |

wHETHER ANY BODY DONATES OR NOT IS PEROGATIVE OF THAT INDIVIDUAL; BUT TO JUSTIFY IT IN TERMS OF BIGOTARY AND RACIST TONES SHOWS THE MAGOT& MINISCULE STATURE OF THE INDIVIDUAL. sHAME BUT EVEN MORE SO TO FIND SUCH PEOPLE ON SUCH A PRETTY AND BEAUTIFUL CORNER OF THE WORLD BOGGLES THE MIND.

"Nothing you do makes much of a difference if you do not have charity. You can speak with tongues, have the gift of prophecy, understand all mysteries, and possess all knowledge; even if you have the faith to move mountains, without charity it won't profit you at all.... "Without charity—or the pure love of Christ—whatever else we accomplish matters little. With it, all else becomes vibrant and alive. "When we inspire and teach others to fill their hearts with love, obedience flows from the inside out in voluntary acts of self-sacrifice and service" (Ensign, Nov 2007, 28–31).

Fred 8 why you NEED to use capitals in your "magot" post , and when directing personal insults be strong enough to address them to the individual concerned ,, because I am not the only person on this thread , who thinks the country is corrupt.................

country is excessively corrupt; president is an ass..h ; there are one million things that needs to be put right.. I agree. I have not defended these. Even the curent official fig of $4 Bill or so spent on defence I doubt is accurate -I would add another couple of Billion dollars to this figure which are not accounted for. BUT $300 billion ..
