Are you referring to the Jet Ski racing? Where was it held last year? I am sure the venue (Cratos Premium) will make this an excellent occasion.

bonnie1707, That link is over 12 years old, surely you could find a more up to date save the planet type media posting. Even if the figures were still the same it would mean the equivelant of a single jet ski is 1625 cars and you can only use a jet ski during the day so you are down to roughly 600 cars per jet ski. I think that is very minimal considering the amount of cars that are actually running in the world compared to jet skis. I will see if I can find a little more updated set of figures for jet ski emmisions

Dave, also frikkin great fun and you would have to be a pro rider to manage 2 hours. 45 minutes has me crippled from muscle pain for the next 2 days but then I do end up trying to do all the stupid things I see on the telly. I really couldn't care less about the environmental statistics, tree huggers do my head in most of the time. Paul

oh Paul I am going to feel all tingly inside today, as I am going to agree with you lol life is too short there are worse things to pick on than someone having a bit of fun on a jet ski (with its emissions) - however safety first and all that would be primary concern of course S have a great day

Hi Proger1, You are probably right in presuming those figures are out-of-date - as Zerochlor states, newer jet skis, at least those fitted with 4-stroke engines are far more environmentally-friendly. Furthermore, the relative impact on the sea would be far less than that on a lake, as in the said article. However, presuming the figures are indeed correct, I have to question how you analysed them to come up with "1625 cars" : The article states that "a conventional jet ski kicks out more pollution in two hours than a late model car does in 130 000 miles". It is only feasible to compare the distance travelled by the two means of transport : A generous estimate for the distance a jet-ski could travel in 2 hours is 50 miles. So, that would mean that, mile for mile, a jet-ski gives out (or gave out in 1998) 2600 times more pollution than a "late-model car" would. Maybe though you are presuming that a jet ski could travel 80 miles in two hrs ... that would fit. Crumpy

Crumpy, That is exactly the figure I used as a rough guideline, possibly a little over estimation but what I didn't bring into account was the fact that jet ski's are in my experience never run for a constant 8 hours even if there were enough people wishing to spend the money to do so at a rental place. Even with the 2600 figure which you have probably more accurately chosen, I would still say that 1 jet ski to 700 to 1000 cars is much lower in real terms. Paul

Dave, That was cruel. You don't think I have all ready been subjected to enough oil release literature and slideshows. I have to sign 26 different documents before I can open my toolbox these days lol

Regardless of whether the figure is 700 or 2600 (per ONE jet ski), I certainly wouldn't want to swim somewhere after that number of older model cars had been driving around in it for two hours !

bonnie, did you read the posts? Your original link was a little over 12 years ago and things have changed drastically since then but it is up to the idividual, most of the time jet ski's are not driven in the same area as swimmers but there is an exception to every rule.

Re : message 18 Proger wrote "most of the time jet ski's are not driven in the same area as swimmers." That's advisable Proger, but not always the case: Have a read of the "Statistics" on this link : http://www.inmotionmagazine.com/opin/jetskis.html#Anchor-Statistics-14177 Summarising, it writes that "In 2000 they (jet-skis) were 19% of registered boats in California, but were involved in 45% of all watercraft-related injuries." And the article continues to say "The personal watercraft (ie. jet-ski) is the only vessel where the leading cause of fatality is not drowning. In contrast to boating accidents, most fatal pwc accident victims die from blunt-force trauma. 75% of pwc accidents are collisions" And Proger, these figures are unlikely to change that much with time. Jet skis ... dirty and dangerous things ...

bonnie, I also wrote "there is an exception to every rule" relating to the same statement. Please don't tell me you are another of the frustrating people who only choose to read the part of posts that can make them look better or more intellectual when they post a reply or follow up. Simple fact, I will swim where I want, you will swim where you want and here is the kicker, every one will swim where they want. If somebody wants to look up the internet to see how dangerous it is, I am sure they are quite capable of doing so although it is helpful of you to give them direct links allbeit a little out of date. The post started with the potential to go and watch jet ski's, you have made your point about you thinking they are dirty and dangerous and even when Dave and I have tried to add humour, you still have to get the your serious opinion across. Noted, understood, thanks, goodbye
