Family looking for Kangal puppy/young adult. We are in no rush. However, we thought with the end of the summer approaching, perhaps a family is returning to home country permanently and faced with the difficult decision of rehoming such a large dog. No need to respond regarding other breeds. We have rescued/rehomed several over the years and our hearts are fixed on a Kangal. Please email minspin14@yahoo.com

Molly, I was told by a TC that the Kangal breed is a Turkish hunting dog and their import into North Cyprus is illegal. Further, that when imported, many have had to describe the breed on documents as "Alsation" and pay a bribe. Obviously I do not know the truth of this and even if true what any rules would be regarding Kangals subsequently bred in North Cyprus. As you know there are often many laws here which are ignored, then suddenly, for whatever reason, enforced. I do hope you get your Kangal but it would be terrible if you then later had to part with it so you may wish to make enquiries with regard to this rumour if you have not done so already. Best of luck.

Thank you deputydawg. It is in fact, illegal to export out of Turkey - an effort to maintain the integrity of the breed. I would have to inquire about the legality of owning one in NC. There are breeders in America and Canada. I realize whatever I found on this island is likely to be a bastard version of the breed - which is why I started the thread to see what my options are. Thanks for the info.

Yes Kangals - or Anatolian Shepherds - are excellent herd dogs, renowned for their hatred of wolves and very high intelligence. Pure Kangals are not ideal family dogs as they prefer to be outside and have a very take-it-or-leave-it approach to humans. Too, they are not well-suited to Cyprus as they have thick pelts and a thick epidermis to cope with the below-freezing temperatures of the mountains in which they work. The happiest Kangals I've seen were a bitch and pups in Erzurum (on the tree-line) in mid-winter. It was -5 by day and between -10 and -20 at night and they lived outdoors the whole time. The most miserable I've seen have been in Cyprus in the summer.

Hi Molly, Do you think at your age you could cope with a Kangal? Also known as the Anatolian Shepherd dog!!!!They can live a long time you know, as mine was 14 when we had to have him put to sleep.

I agree with Gordon the Kangal although a beautiful dog is not suited to the weather here. We saw one at the Kar dog show and the poor thing was suffering with the heat then.

rowan, do you see the part at the beginning that says Bridie, that means it is in response to something Bridie said and if you feel it is inappropriate then that is fine, what you feel that humourous comment has to do with the welfare of the dog is lost on me. Molly, as inappropriate as this may sound to one and all of the public appreciation police, I didn't think they sagged that much. Paul

We had aircon installed for our beautiful Jack, as the summers became hotter here, and he stayed indoors until it was cooler for him. We miss him so much. One of the gentlest dogs we have ever had the privilege to own. Molly, if you are lucky enough to find a Kangal, it would be a great friend for your two little chinese beauties!!!
