Rent's fine - premises of that size are unlikely to go for much less.

The problem is the other overheads - something all hostelries in the TRNC are having problems with at the moment - and something many new to the business fail to take into account when pricing their wares.

John Good - you are making this much to simplistic, what about food, and other drinks? of course your point is correct that to run a successful (i.e. profitable) bar/restaurant in the TRNC is very hard, but it is, as Gordon points out, the complete picture that is expensive. Rent is only one element of a never ending list of permits to pay, utilities to pay, wages, taxes, accountants fees etc, etc. Even if someone owns their property they still have to maintain and repair it. Even if the landlord halved the rent they would have to sell an awful lot of drinks and food to take enough to pay all the bills, or charge so much that everybody complains at the prices and people don't go. I wonder how much longer people will be willing to invest money in the catering/entertainment industry in a country that does nothing to support it's small businesses (foreign or native owned) and that has a majority population that is driven by price and expects great service, great food, comfortable.... cont

cont....

surroundings, warmth in the winter and cool in the summer, cheap beer, long hours but does not see any reason to pay for it. All the time this is maintained restaurants and bars will keep opening and closing with boring regularity. Most of the bars that have survived for any length of time do so because their owners do something else job wise to support what is a very expensive habit. There are exceptions i.e. Guidos which seems to have a very loyal and devoted following but they only acheived this after nearly shutting on a number of occasions and only Lilli and Guido know if they are making any money or just scraping by. Meanwhile bars change hands at a great rate of knots each new owner trying to please the whims of everyone or at least enough people to keep the wolf from the door.

I wish them all the luck in the world!

Selling what? they are trying to give it away! read the post it says that they will pass on the business at the rent of £550 per month. no purchase price asked!

Look around the area, someone will take it on I am sure, and it will relaunch and maybe, just maybe work out for someone. However until people realise just how hard it is to run a bar/restaurant out here and what the true costs are and therefore what people have to charge to make a living then this ridiculous circle of opening and closing bars will continue which helps nobody!

I am sorry if my views cause Freddies bar any problems, that was never the intention, but the mere fact that they are doing what they are doing proves that this island has problems with lack of support from government to small businesses and a clientèle that want everything but in the majority are not willing to pay for it.

I totally agree with your last sentiments about the government not helping small businesses, but with the amount of resaurants and bars, cafe's etc there isn,t enough people to go round to keep these open.Because most expats don,t go out every night and when they do they generally have their favourite place to go to. I personally thought and hoped that 15 would succeed because of what you gave, good quality food, and a burger that was far superior to any other that I have eaten

With the little profit from bars etc it would be better to put the money in the bank and get the interest every month, probably works out about the same without having to work 6 days a week and 12 hrs per day. I can never understand why anyone would want to come here and work all the hours god has given, thats not a new life in paradise (tongue in cheek).

The Bar does make a profit, it is hard work and would suit someone without small children!! it has a great customer base with many local ex pats within walking distance, plus the holiday village opposite. We thank everyone for there support, our regulars who have supported us throughout we want the place to stay open for there sake, and for the hard work everyone has put in. We have had a great time here in TRNC, however with a great job offer on the table, we had to take it. We may return one day, under different circumstances.
