| OK folks, I have the intension of opening a website to help both visitors and residents alike and to hopefully help some of the lesser known businesses become available to the general public. The basis of the website is done but to complete it I need to have the locations of the businesses, I will visit them myself to see whether they want to be part of this idea but I need to have a rough idea where they are first and that is where I need the help. I have created 3 maps which I would like people to assist me by entering the location of the places that you frequent if they are not allready there. In the next three posts you will find each link to the said maps. There is one for bars There is one for restaurants There is one for others as in computer shops, pet shops and the like. Each link will direct you to a google map of my own and if you select the satellite map top right of the map and then follow the instructions on the left I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Paul |

| That site is still there Tootie and it is actually the review site that is part of the main website. The idea of the review site was always part of the main site idea but I introduced it early to take some of the flack away from the restaurants on C44. The interest was good for about 3 days and then it was all forgotten about and I stopped using C44 so it was never brought back to the top. If you want, you can still look at that site and add info if you or anybody else wishes http://ncbarguide.com/review/ It could end up being a good and helpful site but we will have to wait and see. | RachB, thank you jamestalbot, I did try it before but at the time it was just a review site that I hoped to get the suggestions for places. If at first you don't succeeed or something like that. At the end of the day, I have allready built the site and paid for it so I might as well try and use it. Hector, also thanks, I will hopefully keep it going on here as a reminder dd, I will be adding a few taxi numbers to the website, you should probably write them down before you go to the pub or alternatively, get an iphone like I do and you can show whiover is sober. spider, thanks me dorlin XX |

| To Jashans and Pet Life Vet Clinic, thanks for adding yourselves if you did it and if not then thanks to whoever did add them. Come on folks, it really is very easy to do and it will help anyone who wants it to find places they might need. How many times have you seen people asking where something is and you know but are not sure how to give directions, this makes it easy. For all the bars and restaurany=ts and any other business owners, here is your chance to get your place shown on a map that anyone can follow, the more places that are added, the more recognisable it will be. Do your local landlord a favour and put there place on here and tell them, they might even buy you a drink for it. I really am willing to put my own time and effort into this to make it usable for all but I need local help to get it started. Just think about the places that you needed help to find, anywhere in the north and then find them on the map, drag down a pin and name it, I will do the rest. |

| Thanks Jean, I am really surprised though that in the 14 hours since I cretaed this post I have only had 2 map additions and 1 site comment. I am not going to do my usual and start ranting, if people are having problems with the maps please let me know and I will try to make things improved. I really would appreciate help on this one folks. Just have a look at the maps and see if your favourite bar, restaurant or maybe salon or such is there, if not please add it. You can even add it all to the same map if you like, I will change them, just let me know what it is and the name and put it in the right place, I will modify things Thaks again, Paul |

| Is Cyprus44 membership really this unconcerned, are none of the regulars even willing to look at the maps and add some of the places they know. I thought there wer loads of bars on the Lapta strip but it doesn't seem that anybody knows where they are or what they are called. If it is because you don't like me or the way I post that is fair, but the idea behind this is for everybody to have an idea where things are around them. If a tourist comes over and stays in a hotel, where do you think they will be advised to go for things, the idea behind this is to give them a choice. I am asking for help to show what is available to everyone and where it is, Please!! |

| Hi again Paul I would be more than happy to put a couple of places (at least) on the restaurant map. However, I am a complete pillock when it comes to anything technical and I'm afraid of putting them in the wrong place! I wonder if there are others who feel the same way? Could you give me a couple of pointers, please? Thanks. A complete technophobe, aka Jean |

| Cheers Jean, Select the map you would like to add an establishment too and it should open in a new window. This should have about ¾ of the page to the right as a map and the other ¼ to the left as a list with some information at the top. At the top right of the map there is a tab called Satellite, if you click on it you will get an overhead photo as the map. To the top left there is a circle with 4 arrows N,E,S,W. move the map left , right, up and down to find the area you want and zoom in to the place you believe the establishment to be positioned by clicking on the + and – bar below the circle. When you have found the right place click the Edit button above the text in the left panel and a group of 3 boxes should appear to the right of the white circle mentioned before. The middle box has a marker tag which you should click on and then click the area on the map that your establishment should be, you can click and drag the tag again if need be and if it doesn’t automatically cont. |

| cont. automatically open as it should just click on the tag and a text box will appear. Type the name of the establishment in the Title box and add a description and any details you would suggest in the main box than click OK. Back in the left hand box there will now be either a Save or Saved box and a Done box. If it says save then click on it and then done, if it says saved then it has auto saved and you can just click Done. That is it, you have an entry, if you want to do more then carry on and thanks. | Thank you very much for the detailed information Paul. I'll give it a go tomorrow and will probably have to enlist the help of Paul (husband), but I will definitely have a go - hope others do, too, as I think this could be a very useful 'tool'. We have been coming to TRNC for over 20 years and are still unsure of where certain places are. Regards Jean |

| Thanks Jean, it's good to know that some might find value in this idea and not treat it with disdain because I am a hotheaded ass most of the time. And for those who are in the same boat as Jean with not being sure about it, just give it a try, if you make a mistake you can always just click the Edit button again and then click on tag and change what you don't think is right or delete it and start again. Alternatively, if you think you have made a mistake, write to me and I will change or delete the problem. For those who don't want to help because of your opinion of me, think about it this way, the more information I have the busier I will be on the website and the less time I will have to be on here annoying people, in fact if you keep me busy enough I won't have time to post at all. | Paul, I tried to add a POI but google is telling me I must sign-in in order to edit. (?) Also, Sibel with Petlife is moving this week. Her new clinic will be behind the new Starling in Bellapais. As I am not working the graveyard shift, I will dutifully tuck myself into bed now. Night-night! Melanie |

| Melanie, You need to click on the Edit button at the top of the left hand panel, not the blue one to the right and above the map. You can give it another try tomorrow after your beauty sleep. Paul |

| Hi Proger I think this is a great idea, especially as I am just about to come back over and settle in our villa in Karsiyaka. I have tried to add one of my favourite restaurants, and think I have got it in the right place. I will add places as I become more familiar with them and I hope many other individuals do too, as well as business owners. Well done and thank you very much, this could be a great help to me and everyone else! I have also bookmarked the pages for easy access. Could this thread not be made a 'sticky'? |

| Suzi, I am not even sure how to make it a sticky. I think there is a possibility that I may owe some people yet another apology. I have checked the maps and found that allthough there have not been that many additions there have been nearly 450 views so a lot of people are showing interest but maybe as Jean has pointed out, not everybody finds it easy to add the information. With that in mind I have written very similarto the previously posted instructions in the left hand panel of each map. So for those of you who have tried to add information I am sincerely sorry for casting aspirations that you were not interested. Just as an add on, I will try to restrict myself to only posting about the maps and web site I am creating, I tried staying off the forum to avoid arguements but then nobody was bringing the original review site posts forward. Essentially I can't not post and ask for help at the same time so I will try to just do as mentioned. Paul |

| Moderators, as these websites are helpful to tourists and residents alike, can this thread not be pu permanently to the top so that people can add to it, then the websites be shown as a main link on the home page of Cyprus 44? Hope I am not causing controversy by suggesting this, do not know the actual protocol of 44 as regards this. |

| Thanks for that info Melanie. I found that it logs straight onto the page for me but I just realised it will automatically log me in to my google account. If you don't have an account you can log in with the following e-mail address : mapmaker@ncbarguide.com password : cyprus44user You will then need to click on My Maps and then select which map you wish to add to. Sorry again folks, I can see that there have been 770 views, I really hope that the majority of you that viewed it will please go back and try again with the username and password and add some information to the required map. Thanks again, Paul |

| For those folks out there with bars, restaurants and other businesses, if you click on the 3 different map links above and add the view counts it comes to almost 1000 and it is not on the website yet, just goees to show how useful this might be so I would suggest it might be a good idea to have a quick look and add your business to it. | Dear Paul This is a brilliant site, thank you for all your hard work. Wanted to put Joya on the map earlier this week, wasn't quite sure exactly where to place the marker, so it was a good excuse to pay a visit which we did last night (fantastic steaks). I have now placed Joya on the map, but for all your explicit instruction I cannot access the "knife and fork" pointer, all I get is the standard marker. |

I also give my apologies to you for being a bit of an ass, I don't think I do it in normal life so for the life of me I don't know why I get so involved on here. Anyway, I appreciate the wishes, I would also appreciate if you could add a place of interest on the map if you could, the more we populate the map the better. Thanks again, Paul |

| I am starting to see what I think is a bit of a pattern on the map Viewing figures. Bars Map - 630 Views Restaurant Map - 575 Views Others Map - 477 Views I wonder what that tells us, probably just that because it is the weekend, more people are interested in finding bars and restaurants to go to than looking for a shop or public office they need next week. Anyway, I would be delighted if people could add more places, post offices, mukhtars offices, anything that might be useful to tourists, new residents or just the long timers who have a need to find something new. If you have a business you can link your map pin to it and if you have a web site of your own you can link to that too, if you don't have a website but would like to add some details then write to me with the details at admin@ncbarguide.com and I will create a page for you at the site mentioned in the previous post. It is free for the first 500 entries and 100% discount for the remainder. Paul |

| Did you manage Lilli, if not let me know and I will change the existing menu and then create a link on C44, the only problem is that if anybody starts a new post about Guidos you will lose the Menu of the day post. I would suggest starting a post titled, info about Guidos this week and you can inform people about the new menu of the day that will be getting updated daily wiith other info. I can do that once the details have been changed on your new update page if you like, just let me know the menu info and the specials you mentioned. Paul X |

| I must say that I am very surprised at the lack of additions to the maps, there have been up to now a total of 2223 views of the 3 maps and yet there are only a total of 38 venues. Is it that you think you need to pay for this, actually you don't. Is it the fact that you don't think it will help your business in anyway, the viewing numbers above show that it is generating plenty of interest and at the moment it is only being linked from Cyprus44. When I open the main site it will be hit by all the search engines so the visitors can find it Is it the fact that you are not sure how to place your establishment pin on the map, follow the instructions to the left of the map when you have opened the link in either post 1,2 or 3 If you are still having problems, write to me and I will do my best admin@ncbarguide.com Send me all the basics for your place and I will add it to the review site, also free http://ncbarguide.com/review/ I aim to help folks, honest. | Paul - well done; its great to see something positive on this forum. I am relatively new NC enthusiast having bought a place near my parents in Alsancak and when I visit I go to all their favs like Ambiance and Veranda. I'd heard of other places but never knew where they were; now I visited Acmenya last night and will try Guidos at the weekend - because I now know they are within walking distance. This idea will drum up business I am sure - every business in TRNC should support it! Politico |

| Prodger, ref msg 14. I added them and would have included more establishments E of Girne. However, there has been so much development E beyond the golf club, the current Google map is almost useless. I appreciate you cannot change this fact and I will add others later as I can accurately locate them. I will concentrate on the Esentepe-Tatlisu region, as this is where I live. I was unaware of the move of Pet Life and my wife is checking with the vet today. I will confirm this to you, and if so, remove the pointer. Great project - well thought of and executed: well done you! Best wishes |

| Thanks to everyone who has added, especially Tom, I agree about the satellite map being out of date Tom, it appears to be about 1 year old so anything that has appeared since then will not be easy to spot the location without more research. The running totals at the moment are 3419 views and yet there are still only 55 points of interest. Again, thanks to all of those people who have added items, you are helping everybody with your knowledge, lets just hope others will start to do the same. What I would really apreciate is people adding things that tourists and new owners renters might need to do with banks, police stations, residency offices, exchange shops doctors, dentists. The usual places that people are asking for. Thanks guys, lets make this the best tool we can, I know it will start to look busy on the maps but when I have the time to the main site I will be seperating the maps into areas and other subsections but for the moment please keep the additions going. |

| Well done Paul - this is a fantastic idea and when I get to sort out what I have to do I will start to add to it. Could you also do one for leisure places. We found it difficult to find the Lapta Aqua centre and also Turtle Beach. Not sure what Sunset Does or what goes on on Camelot beach and 5 mile beach - maybe some entries like this could be useful. Also, what is available in the Famagusta, Bogaz and Karpaz areas. It is nice to know what is in those areas which we only visit occasionally. We could do with a few more people like you giving 'positive, useful' info on C44 instead of the usual moaners and put downs who haven't got an original thought in their heads!!!! |

| Podger1 What a brilliant idea. I'm going to look up your site and then maybe I can delete the 4 pages of directions and phone numbers I have collected whilst viewing the C44 messages. Don't get dis heartend I also feel a bit techno phobic but will give it a go and try to put something on your site. Thanks for your efforts x |

| Hildy, this is just a basic map for people to add information that they think is useful to, there are no restrictions on what to add, if you want some special items added you can ask but it will have to see if someone will help by adding it. The website will have sectional parts for areas in NC and subject matter like bars, restaurants, hotels, government offices and anything else that people want and I can add more as requested however until I have that finished, just add to the maps here and I will create from there. | Podger 1 I have had a quick try but I don't want to waste your time hand holding me through it. The google map just kept telling me to zoom out as not enough detail available as this zoom level. I tried to put in Alkan Restaurant / Bar in Bahceli as it wasn't on the map but came on later when trying to edit. I will try again when I'm not so nack**d from the weekend. |

| thanks anyway janjin, There are always teething problems with any system, if you zoom all the way down sometimes it does have a lack of detail but just click back on the - bar and it should accept things. Thanks for adding though, it needs as many as possible to make it the best that it can be. Paul |

| thanks again Tom, If it weren't for your additions this project would have stalled by now. I will be adding as much as I can when I am in country again but until then I had hoped for much more from the members, I can't help but be dissappointed but I will still do as much as I can to make this work. It will just take more effort but thanks to your assistance not as much as it could have. Thanks so much, Paul |

| What an excellent idea. Great for me who is hopeless at getting places in the car as I can use the entries as markers for me when driving around as well as for the actual use of finding different places easily. Brilliant thank you Sheila |

| OK folks, I am probably not going to be using 44 for a while as I have completely lost my mind and now the doctors have got the right drugs for me, when I run out and lose my mind I will probably be back on again but hopefully I will stay sane enough to keep away from the majority of ex-pats that I will never be able to find common ground with. I had really hoped to make this work but with the exception of the few who have entered data and the huge amount of input from Tom Steel it has been a bit of a waste of effort. Thanks to those who have tried especially Tom and to the other remainder of the 5037 viewers, thanks for looking but not helping. I will continue with the website and when it is up and running I will post the details on here and will have it linked from the existing site. http://www.ncbarguide.com/review/ If you are interested in making things slightly better keep up to date with it, if not, keep complaining but don't try and change the situation. | Paul Thought I'd bring this back to the top for you. Has it occurred to you that the majority of people looking at the maps may be potential holidaymakers/visitors? a lot of people join the forum months before actually visiting NC so therefore, could not yet add anything to your maps! nevertheless they are very useful especially to newcomers. Don't give up so easily! keep the faith! Maggie |

| Just to let you know that I have just tried to add a few p.o.i. in Lapta area but it's telling me the username or password are invalid. I sort of understand why you haven't had many contributors Paul - it's not particularly user friendly is it? don't forget a lot of the posters on here are complete beginners and have limited computer knowledge. I like to think I know what I am doing but I struggled! Please don't be offended I just wanted to give an honest opinion. It's a great idea maybe just needs some tweeking when you have time. Maggie |

| Maggie, I understand what you are saying about many members being holiday makers but there are a great deal of locals and regulars who could help but haven't. I am not sure why you had a problem with the pages, I just logged on using the username and password from the instructions box top left of the google map page with no problems. They are username - mapmaker@ncbarguide.com password - cyprus44user I now understand how hard Hans has had to work to put all the info together for his maps and have a much greater appreciation for his work. It is really frustrating trying to do this to help others. Paul |
