It is interesting apc, but for such a small place we have so many casinos. Only the casino benefits, not the restaurants or retail outlets, as the casino has them captive. Last week high rollers from all over the world took part in a5 day poker tournament. Many champions from Las Vegas

The article ends with: "the greatest fear is that Turkey will eventually use Northern Cyprus as a Betting Token in its bid to join the European Union". This is a possibility but assumes: 1. Turkey wants to join the EU - debatable 2. Germany and France will allow them to join - highly unlikely 3. Turkey will abandon an island of strategic importance - probably not 4. There is a solution to the Cyprus problem which is acceptable to Turkish and Greek Cypriots and which will allow Turkey to walk away without it looking like it has abandoned Northern Cyprus - highly unlikely

I don't think the EU actually wants Turkey in. If I were Turkey I'd tell the EU to go away (or slightly stronger words than that)

Notice there was no mention of the hundreds of Greek Cypriots who swallow their pride and visit the Casinos in the TRNC.

Isn't it odd to expect a greekos to write something good about anything related to the good of Turkey and TRNC?

"The central bank of Northern Cyprus has resources in excess of $4.5bn for a "state" of just more that 200,000 inhabitants. A good deal of these cash reserves come from casino taxes." First I've heard of that. If it's true why the lack of investment in infrastructure and the pleading of poverty?

Message 5 - yes, a good point. I have often thought that myself. Slag off TRNC and it's inhabitants (singling out Ex-Pats and Turkish mainlanders, mostly) but come across the green line and use the casinos. Still, don't they say 'A fool and his money are soon parted'?

don't they just jeannie, not here it seems. if the eu gamble on this place on their head be it. If the TRNC has had that much the citizens should be asking where its gone. In a suit made by the owner of a certain bank that buys houses back from their subsidiary company, but their tailor does a suit with biggggg pockets

Why are GCs obsessed with TRNC and casinos. After 35 years of econmic suffocation what do they really expect. Really my lovely GC cousins, please stop worrying about us. You know very well whathappens when you stress so much about the people that you love to death. Really we don't need it. We can cope win any s**t you throw at us. I say, perhaps a visit to the local quack may be in order here, what?

message 1: there are misconceptions in this romanian article: firstly pres. sarkozy with strong german support made it crystal clear that turkish eu membership was "inappropriate" in 2007 and now controlling the biggest voting bloc and driven by domestic voters I'd think that conclusive ...the article is out of date the ak government as ismet has suggested understands the reality of the situation and determined efforts to promote its eu application may not be exactly what they seem, even if romania, bulgaria and south cyprus slid in, for good or ill the greek cypriot line has mostly been the eu will accept turkey if it leaves cyprus this is their aspriration after rejecting any compromise but a very far-fetched one: with more than 50,000 turks now living as cypriots, who's pulling out? thatcher fought a major war for 2000 falklanders, upsetting us cold war foreign policy incidentally, never forget there are 150,000 foreigners calling south cyprus "home"

john, in message 15 it looks like you just guessing: as far as I am aware only great britain voiced support for turkish membership as cameron reiterated just recently oh and the swedish foreign minister made a supportive statement: but the french president was so angry he cancelled a visit to sweden the usa has several times asked the eu to admit turkey but cannot dictate there is a point of view that any request from britain or america may even be counterproductive, since new voting rules are based on population and britain plus turkey would soon outvote the eu leaders, france and germany andre
