I will repeat the warnings given on this and every other BB - DO NOT buy ytl in the UK. You always get a better rate here. As for asking todays rate. Waste of time really, in my opinion cos in line with the uncertainty in all markets ytl is varying by up to 0.20 over last 10 days. The rate nigel has observed of 2.27, where!!!! Mid week last it was 2.37.

There really is no point changing sterling into YTL in the UK when virtually everywhere in the TRNC will take sterling. There are now many banks and exchange places in the TRNC where you can change your money.

hi guys, it's strong at the moment because of a high court ruleing in favour of the political party in charge in turkey. even though they have been penalised at least they aren't getting kicked out which is more like a european government than before. if you know what i mean. i bought furniture in march and got 2.63. john.

In Turkey their interest rates have been increased twice in the last 5-6 weeks, this is one reason why the YTL has got stronger

I agree with CIH DO NOT buy ytl in the UK, not even at Airports. We always take good old fashioned 'folding' Sterling with us, split between pockets and bags. A short walk around the numerous Bureau in Girne will get you the best rates. None of these bureau have ever asked us for identification or a passport when changing £500 or £1k. Not that we have anything to hide of course! DO NOT change Sterling in Hotels and try to avoid using it when shopping/eating/buying petrol etc. As wonderfully hospitable as the TC's are, they are still business people, and after a nice meal and some drinks, I bet you will never remember what rate they gave you for Sterling! rob

It may be 2.27 in Turkey but always a lower rate here to the pound, so today it is 2.25 in the trnc. Most exchanges take the rate in the morning and leave it for the day. The exchange in Alsancak changes his rates as and when during the day.

The base rate paid by banks in TRNC is less than in Turkey because there are differing tax regimes etc. So what you see quoted for Turkey will be up to 1% less here. Last I checked, 90 days notice, on line at HSBC was about 18% so getting better all the time. Have not checked our other accounts.
