Do you want to prevent scaling or do you actually want to soften the water?

Tracy, if you really wish to soften the water - you need to fit a cold water water softener to the rising main, but endure that drinking water remains untreated - drinking softened water is NOT recommended - esp. for kids / infants. The placement of a cold water softener will reduce water pressure, so you may need to fit a booster pump or a header tank in the loft IMHO - I'd forget any process that offers to reduce scale Softened water is likely to cause problems if fitted to an existing property as the pipes will de-scale and the deposits cab block valves. You need to be sure to keep plenty of stock of Salt and if you are away - be sure to turn off the water and the water-softener I used to supply industrial cleaning materials for dishwashers and they NEED softened water.. in my experience Permuitit ( big co ) and http://www.avonsoft.com/ ( small but been around nearly 30 years ) could supply from the UK and advise .

mmmmm raises some valid points, however I'm not sure that actual descaling of existing pipes takes place, rather that it is a process of existing scale disolving slowly back into solution, which is then flushed through the system. Certainly, if you actually want soft water, a scale inhibitor, as they are known, will not provide you with it. Soft water is usually provided by a salt softener: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_softening I can provide you with a water softener that uses salt as described above, but I need to know your throughput of water. If you can describe your property, appartment, small house, large villa, etc., I can give you a budget price to supply and instal such a system, but I can advise you that you are looking at about 1500 to 2000 Euros, plus KDV.

Hi Tracy, Keith Msg 10 was nearly right - we were away for a short break in North Wales. Have a look at http://www.softcleanwater.co.uk Email me with a phone number and I will call you if you want to know more The Scalemaster 150 (already good value) will be on a discount deal very soon. Conventional resin softeners require a supply of salt for the regeneration. Downside is that you also need to get rid of the water used in regeneration. The electronic units are cheaper to run but do not work efficiently on still water.
