On a map of Kyrenia (1955) there's a medieval tower (called: "ancient tower") located near the still existing medieval Customs house (Old harbour). In 2010 this medieval tower doesn't exist any more. Maybe some (older) British people can answer one or more of my questions: 1 : Did you see this medieval tower around 1955? 2 : Is the location on the map wrong (shouldn't it be where I placed a red dot on the map below)? 3 : If the medieval tower was there still in 1955 - when was the tower removed? By whom? 4 : Do you have or know of a photograph of this medieval tower? Map (click the URL): http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_uploads/kyr_1955_1_7290.jpg Thank you very much for your attention and hopefully your help!

Hi Iceman! I'm sure there has been a medieval tower in that area. But I think it's located in the wrong place on the 1955 map - the restaurant on the corner, opposite the Customs house, has the shape of a round (not: horseshoe) tower and may have been built on the fundaments or base of the vanished medieval tower. See tower E on this map: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/Kyr_1300-dreghorn-1991_walk_72.jpg

I have an aerial photo of the harbour taken in 1957. It shows no tower near the customs house. The photo was taken by Wing Commander R Edwards.

Iceman, your picture shows the horseshoe shaped tower (half open) with the letter B on my map. It was a wall tower and most probably there was another one in the (vanished) city wall between A (the Round tower) and D (remarkable for the time when it was built: the square tower where we now find the 19th century Greek Orthodox church, now the Icon Museum). http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/Kyr_1300-dreghorn-1991_walk_72.jpg

Hans According to Dreghorn's illustration, the missing Tower E must have been where Martı fish restaurant is now.

Thank you all for your interest in this TRNC subject: one Turkish Cypriot and one English gentleman whom I know to be/feel like a Turkish Cypriot. Next time I'll write Karaoke or Marmite in the header.

Hans, If you want to know anything about Kyrenia especially around the Harbour. Speak to Bingal who runs Windows Cafe across from Beledeysi in Girne. He has a wealth of old photos coupled along with his knowledge Im sure you will find a chat with him very very interesting.
