There cheap as chips now ....£20 unbranded ..... £30 for Toshiba ..... throw away technology made in good old China

Not in TRNC, they're not!

Try Tektan service centre in the middle of Girne - it'd down the road next to Socrates Hotel, not far from the Savoy.

I'm sure that they'll tell you if it's worth fixing...

Thanks everyone. If I can get a friend to buy one from Tesco's and bring it out that seems best solution. Otherwise I'll try Tektan.
