We will be out in North Cyprus in three weeks time, first holiday for three years! My wife may need to call the UK frequently from a public telephone in North Cyprus. Are there many Public Telephones in Ozankoy / Catalkoy area? Would she be able to purchase telephone cards or could she use her credit card or would she have to use coins in the public telephones? Would it be cheaper to call after 6.00 pm local time? My wife also has a pay as you go mobile with UK Orange Sim Card. Would it be better to purchase a local pay as you go Sim Card when out on holiday? Many thanks.

By far the cheapest option is to use skype. New laptops have microphones and cameras built into them, so you'll even be able to see the person you're calling and vice versa.

I would say it would be better for your wife to purchase local pay as you go Sim Card. She will need to take her passport/driving licence to one of the shops in Girne who do these; there are several in the main high street and some supermarkets also have counters that do this. The Sim Card will be registered in her name, hence the need for ID. Public phone boxes are very few and far between. Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for prompt responses. My wife will be calling her 88 year old mother so skype would not suit for this particular situation. We will probably opt for the local pay as you go sim card. Again very many thanks for your help and advice.

Skype is still the best. Credit your skype account with £10 and you can call any landline or mobile in the Uk at a fraction of the cost. Better by far. You will obviously need a dongle though.

If you are in Girne go down the high street turn right at the crossroads just round the corner there you will see a big orange there are three phones there, dial 0044 leave the 0 off your no, it is very cheap to ring UK. you use the phone then the man there tells you how much. I use it to ring home on Christmas Day.

Definitely buy a local simcard. Even so ringing the UK. from a mobile is not cheap especially if you are ringing a UK mobile. These are the rates from the KKTC Turkcell website. Check out prepaid rate plans & world packages. http://www.kktcell.com/kktcell/default_en.html The rates per minute are based on a contract mobile which is cheaper than pay as you go. Rates for calling United Kingdom from a Contract mobile. GSM 0.75 TL/min (approx. 30p per min) Land lines 0.40 TL/min (approx 17.5p per min) Pay as you go tariff GSM 27.50 units/min Land lines 10.83 units/min You might find it cheaper to buy a world package if you are not making many local calls. World Prepaid Line 60 mins 1000 units 120 mins 1500 units

Woodspeckie, message 8, many thanks for the information. Musin M, message 9, thanks also for that; I will have to see if my wife's mother can actually make the call unaided? Scruff, message 10, thanks for the weblink and also for the various tariffs. All information has been extremely helpful and is very much appreciated. Cyprus 44 is an excellent and prompt means of gaining helpful and constructive information from seasoned campaigners! Cheers!
