his so called astro suit sprung a leak and he had severe frost bite on his hands and toes but as you see he survived.A very brave man considering the technology of the day,pretty basic stuff that he used...

He is still active and advising on the 'Red Bull Stratos' project (which you can Google) to increase this to 120,000 ft (his was a mere 102,000+ ) and to break the sound barrier (his was only 614mph).
