I can't believe that Cyprus Today newspaper has 24 pages. I think thats its a disgrace to have a paper that only has that many pages. Especially when you own Kibris newspaper, surely you can put some more articles in. Or is it because Asil Nadir is not here at the moment. I really do think they need more competition here than just 2 competing. I refuse to buy the paper anymore. ITS JUST GETTING THINNER AND THINNER. Soon it will be like a leaflet............. D

Why buy it anyway, when anything newsworthy, or noteworthy, is so well reported and covered in Mal's excellent 'NCFP' [North Cyprus Free Press] ? ? ?

RE msg 1, chocoloco: (...) ITS JUST GETTING THINNER AND THINNER. Soon it will be like a leaflet............. (...) => No news paper can be produced from the money the buyers pay. Advertisements are far more important. And the crisis in tourism in TRNC has hit most of the hotels, restaurants and bars (and other businesses) - hence fewer ads. And a "thin" Cyprus Today as the result. P.S. I think Cyprus Today should make other choices: more TRNC news/backgrounds and less old UK and old World news. TRNC news in English is hardly available on the Internet - one doesn't need Cyprus Today for UK and World news: the net is faster and more complete.

Doppelganger What a good idea. Using your example why not next time that you go to a restaurant, take your own food, cook it yourself, take it to the table and then pay the full menu price or better still, take your car to the nearest car wash, tell the lads to take an hour off, wash it yourself and then pay them anyway. I take your point to a degree, but the paper is getting pretty thin these days - so thin in fact that I am now only getting 2 visits to the toilet rather than the previous 4 Paul

Listen im just saying they need to be more creative. They can do it in the Kibris edition why not pick the top stories in Kibris and translate for the british. Im sure Kibris is out everyday. I agree with message 4 they tell you about old news that the internet has already covered about the UK, that im afraid takes up 5-6 pages. If the newspaper is selling anyway it does not cost a lot more money to print some more interesting things about Cyprus it has a lot of history and interesting facts. Personally i think the staff are lazy if thats the best they can come up with, when Kibris and Cyprus Today are the same company i think its a joke!!! Doppelganger you must work there if you do then fix up!

RE msg 9, chocoloco: (...) Personally i think the staff are lazy if thats the best they can come up with, when Kibris and Cyprus Today are the same company i think its a joke!!! (...) => I don't think all reporters are lazy. Some reporters are just not qualified (but probably very cheap) and are only apprentices. In my time as the editor of two different desks at an Amsterdam based, big Dutch national news paper (Het Parool) I wouldn't hire them as first year apprentices. Well, this country has the news papers in English (Cyprus Today & the Cyprus Star) it deserves, I'm afraid.

chocoloto; If you think CT's reporters are lazy and need to transcribe stuff from Kibris I suggest you find a Turkish speaker and actually find out what Kibris prints every day. It's not earth shattering by any standard. As to local Brit orientated content please remember the Brit population here is that of a small English village (plus one Nederlander) how interesting was your parish newsletter? I think they give the government an easy ride on issues such as blood tests etc but like you and I as guests in the country they have to tread carefully. They do the best they can.

If newspapers are struggling for topics, why doesn't one of the journalists write a series of articles about the Cyprus creatures that have decided that we are on their menu. "Things that bite us !" We could think that it is always mosquitoes, but that's not the case, and different bites require different solutions, Do perfumes attract them? Let's have some pictures of the various flying insects, give us something to put on our dart boards, so we can get our own back !!!

I think the paper went downhill when they started to bring out the mid week edition. I think it would be better to revert back to one paper at the weekend again with the whole of the week's news in.

I totally agree with mes 17. It was a much better paper when it just came out on Saturdays. The mid-week edition isn't worth buying. Please if anyone from Cyprus Today is reading this, can we have our old paper back?!

RE msg 14, lilli: (...) i think they are controlled, no reuters (...) => This has nothing to do with "control", Lilli. News papers have to subscribe to (inter)national news agencies and that's a rather expensive matter. Small news papers (circulation Cyprus Today may be around 2000 copies - my estimate) usually cannot afford such subscriptions.

A paper like Cyprus Today should have a local news correspondent in every town and village (does CT have that?), and the news flow between Karsiyaka and say Esentepe should be coordinated by a supervisor like Ian Sheperd (based in Girne).

Well catalkoykid. you've got my attention. What is it you dont like about Pauline Read, perhaps maybe she has more balls than you could ever dream of, or maybe she tells it like it is AND NCFP gave her an opportunity to do so. Name one thing she has reported that is not the truth. She did not go looking for the things that happened to her, but she sure as hell is not going to cower in a corner and expect them to go away. Unlike a lot here, she will take on anyone and if they dont like it, tough. They brought it to her and not the other way around. It is absolute nonsense to suggest that NCFP is other than an on line newspaper available to anyone, including you, who has anything newsworthy to say. It was here before my troubles started and it will be here when they finish, if they ever do. If it bothers you I have too much to say, it bothers me too. I wish my life here was what I expected, quiet and relaxing. What is happening to me is not of my making, but I sure as

Everyone knows Pauline and pollymarples are inseparable. Whilst there is breath in our bodies we will not be silenced. I thank NCFP for their support and I thank CYPRUS TODAY too. |

I think the reference was to our twice weekly summary of the Cyprus Today. NCFP is set up for people to contribute articles, very few people do but so far we have printed everything we're been sent. If it hasn't got anything that interests you that's because no one has sent us any articles on those topics

Sorry if it is not to your liking catalkoy kid, I dont think Malcolm ever claimed it was serious competition to the papers you pay for. It caters to local issues, IF, someone cares to send an article in. I personally never ever thought I would be writing for public readership but thanks to the adomination they call the property market here, I am. I happened on NCFP and like anyone else could, if they so desired ,I submitted my first article and Malcolm published it. If I have a lot to say, it is because the system here has given me a lot to say. I pray for the day when I have NOTHING to say. For someone to offer this facitlity, at his own expense with no revenue whatsoever is a tribute to Malcolm and NCFP but like anyone who puts themselves in the public eye, there will always be critics, so criticise away - heres a thought though, instead of using this gossip factory. Try writing a well thought out article and submit it, Malcom will publish it.

Good grief, 'catalkoykid' - your insincerity even outweighs your obvious ignorance! As for 'Cyprus Today'; one edition per week would be quite sufficient, but if that happened again, they would probably double the price, as is the trend in Cyprus when sales drop!

Tenakoutou - thanks for your support. I am aware that Pauline Read fatigue could take place, especially with people who are not suffering the same problems. However, as with the TV on/off switch catalkoykid do I need to say more. Talking of fatigue, I am getting pretty tired of all that has heppened and is still happening to me. Malcolm has confirmed that he does publish EVERYTHING that is submitted, so for those who do not wish to read anymore from me. please skip my articles. I have to say though, I do get a lot of hits, some would even rival the readership of the English speaking newspapers. CANNOT WAIT TO SEE CATALKOYKID'S article on NCFP. I apolgise to those on C44 who do use this forum for serious discussion.

catalkoykid It doesn't have to be about property problems. Natalie Nightingale writes beautiful articles about the joys of nature. Robin writes his tidbits. There is room for all subjects. Actually it would be lovely to read about a subject totally unconnected with property problems. I am pleased yours was a good experience when you bought, unfortunately, greed took over and well over a thousand people are waiting for the hammer (auctioneers hammer) to fall. Thank you for your words of encouragement. Will we see you at the Candlelit 'Silent' Vigil on the 4th October? Turkish Embassy Lefkosa.

When painting my front door, I laid Cyprus Today newspaper on the floor and discovered a great double paged article on snakes from 2007, really good. I put it on my kitchen wall. Unfortunately Dipkarpaz sells no newspapers at al, so I only get to see them on our monthly visit to the big city. I don't know it Yenierenköy sells it but I have not seen it there.
