The villa a few doors from me was burgled between 19.30 and 21.30 on Wednesday evening. The people are visiting North Cyprus for the first time and had only arrived earlier that evening.

It looks like the burglar got in through a window in the lounge which had been left open but the shutters were closed! Just be aware that these shutters will not stop someone breaking in.

It was on the Lapta sea side near the Sempati Hotel.

That is so awful for these poor guys. We have been chaining and padlocking our shutters during the summer when we have the windows open but guess even that would not stop a determined burglar even though we have dogs (too soft for their own good!)

Should have added as a warning that the minute these people discovered the burglary they used their other phone to alert 'Orange' who immediately locked the stolen phone, the police said if you do this it makes it almost impossible for them to find the culprits!

That is horrible for the visitors - and the owners. I really hope the police catch up with them.

On shutters - we had some fitted to both protect oue blinds and furniture from the sun, but also as a deterrent. The guys who fitted also added bolts across the top and bottom between the 'opening door' and the one with the vertical bolts. It makes the whole shutter unit extremely solid and very difficult to jemmy. Also, they would have to break the metal in several places to get through.

Just a tip for those with shutters - very cheap and easy, and really strenghtens your security a lot. The window pins on sliding doors a definitely worth it as well !

Also fit locks to the little square downstair toilet windows as they can get through there too.

When you are out or away put a metal bar in the runner of the sliding doors and windows they will never open them.

Have you read the latest,(not here in trnc) thugs are throwing eggs at car windowscreens and when you turn the wipers on and washers you cant see a thing, and when you stop they attack and rob you.

Still much safer here if you become a little bit more street wise than a few years ago.

A friend had an attempted burglary here in UK during the night. Thankfully he disturbed them before they got inside and saw 3 of them running away down the street. When he told the police this, they said that they were probably going to steal his car as well as anything else they could take from the house.

Their advice was NOT to take the car keys upstairs at night, but to leave them where the thieves could find them, rather than risk them going upstairs to take them from you!!! Apparantly the latest trick is that they are boiling your kettle when they get in the house and leaving it at the bottom of the stairs, so that if you come downstairs they throw the hot water at you, giving them time to get away.

Msg 8 - right on - they fitted 2 white metal bars over the little window as well to prevent a child being sent through to open the doors when they fitted the shutters.

As also stated, generally crime is very low - and certainly much better than UK (everything alarmed !!)- but it always pays to take a few sensible precautions to save later suffering.

How awful for those poor people, not a good welcome for them. I am lucky as live in an old Cypriot house, with bars on the window. Not so good of course when you lock yourself out.

We learnt of the same problems at our villa in Spain where burglary is rife. The installation of any deterent such as a wireless burglar alarm is very sensible. It does one thing, it displaces the thieving thugs to another property with no security whatsoever.

The first thing we did on taking ownership of our trnc property was install a wireless alarm with 3 PIR's, a good loud shrill noise will put most two legged rats off, and send them back to the holes where they came from.

I guess, eventually somebody will have the idea of installing alarms linked to response! The only other complete answer would be an electrified fence to barbecue the bas......s.
