Just purchased a new laptop from uk running windows 7 64 home premium. My old desktop runs xp pro. Microsoft recommends using a usb cable and provided disk to transfer data from old to new using a routine called Easy Transfer. Has anybody done this and if so where can i buy either here or within walking distance of ledra street crossing. All ideas and suggestions welcome. Many thanks in advance.

If you connect to the Interent through a wirless router at home the easy way would be to 'share' your data folder on the XP laptop then access it from the 7 laptop and copy the files across.

I knew I had written about this............ I know a lot of people are bringing back 'snazzy' little netbook computers from the UK. After all, they're very small and easily fit between the towels in your suitcase ('nod and a wink!') Problem is, transferring those user accounts, files & folders, program data files & settings, e-mail messages, settings & contacts, photos, music & videos and windows & internet settings from the old PC/Laptop running XP onto your nice, new, shiny netbook running Windows 7. Two choices here: either spend a day or, two manually setting everything up and copying all those files across OR, save valuable time by finding a way to complete the task automatically. "Windows Easy Transfer for Windows 7" is a 'little known' Microsoft program/utility that automates this process and can take as little as 15 minutes of your time, (depending upon the amount and size of files.)...........

Download and install the program onto the XP machine before running it by clicking "Start" then, "All Programs" then, "Windows Easy Transfer for Windows 7." A welcome screen outlines what the program can do, telling you that it lets you copy files and settings from one computer to another with no information being deleted/lost from the old computer. Start the process by clicking "Next" before choosing a media type to use to transfer the data and then, confirm that this is your "old computer" (the computer running XP.) I normally use a USB memory stick to store and transfer the data, but you can use a special lead, detachable hard disk drive or, even transfer the files and settings across a network. The program automatically checks what can be transferred and then, gives you the option to deselect any information that you do not wish to copy across. You can password protect the file if you wish before clicking "Save" to complete the process...........

This utility/program is included in Windows 7 so, it doesn't need to be downloaded/installed a second time. Just run the program on the Windows 7 machine and follow the instructions.
