anybody had any success in growing runner beans in tne trnc? tried this year plenty of growth - plenty of red flowers but they would not set! any advice/tips would gratefully received

we tried the 1st year we were out here with some success but no beans since (been here 5 years)

Unless you have a lot of time and patience to dab all the flowers with a paint brush which pollinates them i think you will be unlucky. There are not many bees here which would normally do the job.

Only if you can get them to stand still long enough to grow roots. You may solve the problem of runner beans in Cyprus. Oh and some water helps too.



We are able to grow Bogrulce/black eyed peas without watering it. What is needed is a decent bit of soil and you will find it in a unmentionable place nearer the border with our GC cousins.

...........if the weather's hot, red-flowered types tend not to set. Heat-tolerant white-flowered varieties still produce a crop.

and trying to encourage what few pollinators we have here.... grow some lavender nearby and try to shelter the plants from the mossie sprays that come round every night. They may stop us getting bitten but they kill every insect in their path.
