Girne has a Mayor (Başkan): Mr Sümer Aygın. You can email him here: s.aygin@girnebelediyesi.net . Phone (to make an appointment via his secretary): 0392 815 2118/9 or 03928151889. Mobile: 05428821119. You'll find the location of Girne belediyesi (townhall) ont the "Map of Girne" here: http://is.gd/f9RUb .

We live in the Turkish Quarter and our Mukhtar is the one opposite the Court building. He runs Oz cafe which is next to the Telecommunications building. The best time to catch him is before 10am on weekdays.

Thanks Dutch Crusader and Karanfil. Is that the guy i see every morning on my way to work sitting at a little table? I wondered why he was so popular! So if i go and ask him for one of these "ikametgah belges" will he just give me one or does it come at a price? Thanks again... most helpful

RE msg 3, Karanfil: Interesting, I didn't know that Girne town had one (or more ?) Muhtar(s) ("village head") also! IS there more than one? If so: who and where?

Manta Yes, he's the one! Don't know about a letter to open a bank account. We are with Turk Bankasi in Karakum and we just took our passport into them, but that was over 3 years ago and things may have changed. We get a letter from him every year to renew our residency and also had to have one for Customs when our furniture arrived from the UK. He charged us 10TL each for them and then we had to get a stamp from the Post Office. He speaks quite good English and will explain it all to you. Good luck!

Hans I don't know if there are more than one Muhtar for Girne. I only know of Selcuk at Oz Cafe. When we go for our residency form he has to get two more signatures on the form (as I think all Muhtars do). He goes around the corner from his cafe to collect one and this time he sent us to see a man called Cemal who runs a coffee shop opposite Sele restaurant to get him to do the other signature. I don't know if these men are Muhtars or just !ocal councillors. I know that Selcuk is the Muhtar for our area but I imagine that because the town is quite large there maybe more than one. Sue

The other two men are the muhtars witnesses and they have to sign the ikametgah aswell as the muhtar for the letter to be valid. İ work for the Ozanköy muhtar and we charge 10tl per letter and we put the stamps on so i expect it will be the same there. Zoe

Re : message 7 - "I don't know if there is more than one muhtar for Girne" We have at least two muhtars just for here in Lapta - we live less than 400 metres from the village centre, but our muhtar is not the one that has an office in the centre - so there must be a fair few for Girne. As one would imagine, we firstly went to the muhtar in the village centre to get our ikametgah belgeleri - It would clearly save people a lot of time and energy if we could access maps showing the regions for each muhtar ... then again maybe it's all part of the fun to go exploring the streets around our homes

Because they were after a salary recently. |
