Can somebody please clarify if you have to be a resident in TRNC to be able to purchase a car and register it accordingly. A relative is going out to stay long term in our apartmrnt and would need a car? All replies welcome

You only need your passport and an address to transfer the log book but they will have to get a TRNC licence after 3 months to comply with insurance and you need residency to get one

You don't have to be a resident to buy a car and insure it. But as your relative is coming to the TRNC long term they will be getting Residency anyway.

We were seriously looking to purchase car when we come out this time. We never stay on longer than the 90 days and thought that we could insure the car and drive it on our UK Driving Licence. Is this not possible? Is it necessary to be a resident in order to own, insure and drive a car legally.

As I have just completed this 2 days ago I suppose my info is about as up to date as possible. crofter is correct. I have just registered my car in my name and got a full years insurance and I have no residency, nor do I have a local driving licence. All you need is as stated above a valid passport and you require a single signature to achieve all the legalities, oh and the fees of course to purchase the car, insure it, register it and tax it. Hope it helps, Paul

batgirl, as you stated above, if they are here for more than 3 months they require a TRNC licence but if they are here for three months they will have to all ready have a residency as the maximum stay for visit visa is 90 days. Please believe me when I state the above information as I had the option to register the car in either mine or my wife's name who does have residency and the legality is just the same. Just to put this in logical terms, it is the vehicle that is insured not the driver although the insurance will be void if the driver is not legal and if you have been in the country for more than 3 months continuously you must have a TRNC licence but as this will be over the 90 day visit visa maximum then you should all ready have residency. I am sure you were trying to be helpful but I object to being questioned by someone who is not obviously in the given situation.

To be fair proger1, a few years ago, there was a story/rumour/fact that after 1 month in the TRNC your UK. DL was unacceptable for Insurance purposes. You needed a TRNC one. This was particularly stupid, since even for people intending to get Temp. residency, it was highly unlikely that by that time you'd have got it & also your first TRNC DL, which also did take 2 weeks or more to get. You couldn't get a TRNC DL without Residency & supposedly you couldn't drive for up to 3 mths on a UK. licence. This was all reported in Cyprus Today & the subject of much discussion at the time. It was obviously the source of much concern amongst people newly arrived, waiting for the Residency to be completed & then applying for a TRNC DL. It was also of concern to people owning property & a car here, but only visiting for 3 mths at a time, which they are entiltled to do. What the end result was, I do not know? People just stopped talking about it. ctd.

ctd. Assuming the BRS website is totally accurate about this, it seems that you do not now require a TRNC DL until you have been here 3 mths. It doesn't affect me because I am a resident, but if I wasn't & planning a longer stay than 1 month, I would check with my Insurance Company just to be on the safe side. Belt & braces & all that. Assuming that proger1 has in fact done that & that there is just one rule, then no problems. Please remember that this is the TRNC & rules here do not sometimes make sense, are impractical or contradict themselves.
