No you don't need a residence visa to buy a car.

But you do need to have residency to obtain a TRNC driving licence. your UK licence is only valid for 90 days

and your insurance will be invalid as well

Msg5. That's 90 days each time you visit. So if you live in the UK, you could come here several times a year, for a total of more than 90 days, and you will be OK.

However it's based on where you "normally live", so if you live in the TRNC and duck off to the south or Turkey in order to claim another 90 days and avoid applying for residency, that wouldn't count, and the 90 days would start on the date of your first arrival in the TRNC, even if you don't have a residency stamp in your passport.
