I suppose its a serious question, so I will treat it accordingly. 1. There is no such thing as a "Notary" in Cyprus, we only have "Certifying Officers" whose job is to cetify a signature. Unfortuantely most declare themselves to be Notaries and by drawing up legal contracts etc. they are liable to serious damages if sued. 2. Almost all notaries in Cyprus have no formal education in law but I am aware of at least one in Girne who is also an Advocate but he is the exception. 3. Notaries are appointed with the approval of the Council of Ministers as proposed by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. Hence if you wish to become a Certifying Officer you must apply to this Ministry. The relevant law Chapter 39 for Certifying Officers (Tasdik Memurları) and can be found on the website of the courts http://www.mahkemeler.net/cgi-bin/elektroks.aspx ismet

Elko, The only bit I don't understand is... "by drawing up legal contracts etc. they are liable to serious damages if sued." How come Lawyers draw up duff contracts, ones very seriously flawed that do not guarantee the buyer anything let alone the deeds get paid shed-loads of cash and only shrug with impunity? Stating "I have no duty of care!" and seemingly they are impossible to sue and yet notaries/certifying officers risk heavy fines... how does that happen?

msg. 7: The advocate draws up a contract in accordance with intsructions from you and to the best of his ability. On the other hand, the so called Notary which is not true is accepting money under false pretences i.e. by calling himself a Notary he implies that he has legal knowledge/education. I have seen some contracts drawn up by such people where one lends money to the other and there is no specific date of paying back the debt. ismet
