Hi

Someone recently asked the question can anyone recommend the Meta System on a previous

thread

Have searched and can not find the original question so hence no reply

Are there any members out there who have this system and can you give us any constructive

feedback on Meta. For example do they suffer the same as Dopi and Digital Supreme? from

constant sometimes long term scrambling/freezing.

There seems to be a number of dissatisfied people on this forum looking for an alternative

so your comments I am sure will be appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, there is some freezing and our internet is connected in with some channels, so when the system is down, no internet and certain channels are not available. We have the lowest speed 512 and often the service drops. I just put it down to 'Welcome to North Cyprus'!!!!!

Had Meta back in 2002. It lasted until 2004. Then the channels started disappearing. Then I got the Cyprus shrug.

They are all the same. Illegal & useless.

digiturk was fine until they started loosing the English speaking channels which was a shame i would have paid to have an extra 'English package' just like they do for the extra sports channels maybe thats an idea they could take up on there are enough expats here and on the main land that would take up the offer am sure

Hi Rogerdidger.. following the outbursts of one 'official dealer' [ grey-market importer] for a rival sat tv platform - I'd be 'careful' about mentioning that in the open.. ;)

OKey dokey..

You will make a nice 'guinea pig'... if you pardon the phrase ! ;)

I'll give you the use of a slingbox for free - for a couple of weeks - as I'd REALLY like to see how it performs on such a speed..

If you are interested you can email me from the address in my profile - all you need to do is download some legal ( digitally signed) software.. I'll talk you through the rest and it will be a good test...

Hi Juliamoores.. A slingbox is a device that converts a setup box out put ( sat receiver - for example ) from one country - and you can view it on t'other side of the world.

You get the picture - you change channels - as if you are sat ( say) i the UK

The critical factor that had me pooh-poohing them was always network UPLOAD speed.. from the UK to the viewer location...

Now.. I have access to a FAST network and the trials have shown that - it works perfectly well on a crummy netbook ( not a powerful pc) in Siberia.. and if Wifey can watch the weakest link from there... ;)

Hi Sunshine

Not necessarily! - and it is only 'stupid NOT to ask- if not sure . ;) ..

There is a device called a "sling catcher" that can be installed to a TV your end - instead of watching on a laptop / PC / Mac - and you can use a PHYSICAL remote control - instead of the virtual one on the computer screen !

Keep the Q's coming - as they are useful to me - I'm the 'know it all' ...

So am I right in thinking this Slingbox needs to be connected to a tv system in the UK and to an internet connection in the uk to be able to use it here?

The principle is that the kit ( slingbox / receiver ) has to be yours... we will charge for the network upload connection

I have looked at this system and others like it. The picture quality is not good and in TRNC, it continually stops and starts and freezes because the internet is not good enough, especially at busy times (in the evening - when you want to watch TV)

You need a constant 1 Mb internet connection which will fluctuate +/- 400kbps - as internet connections here are shared. This is not a new idea. It has been tried before and will be tried again

On another of mmmmmm's business escapades ( web site http://www.skycards.us ), he sells amongst other things, a SKY HD receiver for illegal use outside the UK with a 326% profit margin. If he is applying the same profit margins to this new escapade, it is going to be far too dear for the normal folks here.

I have tried the slingbox connected to my friends cable in the UK and watching via my laptop here unfortunately it suffers with quite bad picture quality and sometimes freezes or stops hmmm can be quite annoying. I have 1mb nethouse networks broadband and would of thought it would of worked better. Any advice to improve this would be greatly appreciated.

FACT: .. For this system to work, it needs the internet. Over the past year, Members have complained continually about the other TV systems that need the internet to work. The picture stopping and starting, freezing, down for days on end. This is just another version of what has already proven to be a failed enterprise

I am going to do some research on this, purely for the benefit of the members here and report back shortly with some cheaper, better alternatives - watch this space!

Skeeds, unfortunately it is the internet that is the problem. The bandwidth needed is a constant 1 Mbps and you need this speed from here, right through Europe to the UK. If there is a bottleneck anywhere along the way, it just doesn't work

mmmmmm has another business idea running on another web site ( http://www.4bigtv.com/ ) which is, I presume based in Cyprus. It can't be doing that well because it looks as though he is diversifying from a satellite based TV system to an internet based TV system.

Anyone that is looking at this - be wary

1/ If a SKY HD box cost 399 and a HD world sub costs 732 GBP- and I'm making those margins I'd be charging nearly 4 grand ;) .. You are simply repeating a fib - trying to get this thread closed, too ?!

You are breaking Sky's Ts and Cs by using the subscription outside UK / Ireland - it is NOT a criminal offence ... Supplying Abu Dhabi TV is JUST the same !

2/ Slingbox.. If it isn't going to work in 'TRNC' the folks testing it will soon enough confirm what you say... I am quite sure you didn't have the UPLOAD connection speed necessary.. DC is using it quite happily for Dutch TV ... how do you 'explain' that ?

3/ 4Bigtv - I own the domain for that .com/ .co.uk .. My step son is playing with those domains - I used to supply plasma TVs for retail use in the late 90's early noughties... it has been defunct for five years... my family members use it for their emails .. Your 'research' ain't too hot.. If you had asked I would have told you I hold 20+ other doma

Profit margins - cost of HD receiver £130 - http://www.ciao.co.uk/SKY_SKY_HD_BOX__6492692 - add cost of viewing card @ £20 = £150

cost of HD receiver on one of your 20+ web sites inc. delivery@ £90 = £489.00 - http://skycards.us/HD.html = 326% profit

Seems like you have had quite a few business ideas that must have failed along the way - what's good for the goose is good for the gander!

( cont) domains.. some with .ru endings for the Russian market...

Oh didn't you know I advise Russian speaking expats how to get their TV, too ;)

As you raised it .. that's how I met my Wife.... I was travelling to the former Soviet Union countries - a lot - and even dabbled with the idea of broadcasting - but the investor - backed out - sensibly for him - feeling the early chills of recession.

I asked him for help to buy LOTS of AD receivers, though, and we got a good price this morning ;)

re msg 37 You don't DO specifics - I am holding the prices for a SKY HD box from SKY in front of me - it is 399 - the prices you see are based on subsidised units - that require a UK phone-line connection.

As you won't allow readers to 'accept' that WHY are year old SKY HDs selling for 150- 200 GBP on Ebay ?

If you order SKY and ask fro a second HD box on a multi-room sub you will pay £299GBP - and it must be on a HD package and plugged into the same tel number....

Come on Washerman... stop trying and failing to deflect.. what do YOU pay for AD boxes with embedded cards, eh : ;) - for sure it's not 175 GBP - like any punter in the areas where they officially cover - can pay..

THAT's what they pay in Syria or Lebanon, too .. so may be that ferry will do a roaring trade ;)

You already asked this - AND had the answer .. the secret is the UPLINK... You would know DC's network .. are you suggesting it doesn't work and that Hans is fibbing ?!

I am SO certain it will work I will ask Hans to demo it in 'TRNC' ;)

Washerman - re 43 this is VERY simple.. I have a solution... I think it will work... I saw Hans' work - so I went away an tested it... It has been tested in nations with 'good' internet connectivity... and in some where it's not so hot....

The person it most surprised was yours truly - I know you wouldn't WANT to visit Hans' place - after your comments on here - so why don't you wait and see what folks you will try it say?

There are several members here who have their own sling boxes in the UK - and use them in CY on 3G dongles ! ( They contacted ME and reported back their satisfaction )

For those who can't / don't want a BIG dish - this is already working....

RE msg 45, Washerman: (...) Hans, so historically, why have you always complained about your internet connection? (...)

=> Since I got rid of the complete failure of The Internet Club I subscribed to Nethouse Networks and I think (listening to others in TRNC) that I have the best available connection in TRNC - which however leaves much to desire. Yes, my 'complaint' is that ISP's in TRNC cannot match the service offered for less money in Holland (and possibly the UK). Just a fact.

RE msg 46, Washerman: (...) Hans, does your TV system rely on the internet and does it work when the internet is down? (...)

=> I can hardly believe that you ask this question in earnest. I write about a Slingbox and you know damn well (I hope) that it's an Internet system. Or do you think I bought one of NASA's satellites? So, no Internet, no TV.

Dear TraceElliot

I don't know HOW that is possible - 399GBP IS the price for the HD receiver.. it is discounted ( in the form of commission back from SKY ) according to the package and reporting back by phone line ..

Either this is distressed stock or a reconditioned unit

I doubt you really have a reading comprehension issue .. Did you miss how many places it's been tested and WORKED..? Did you miss that MEMBERS have told me it works in 'TRNC' for THEM..

I have bought the sling boxes and have the receivers in stock - IF I'm 'wrong' - you'll see a flood of sling boxes on the market ;)

As I'm not going to charge RIP OFF margins - I expect it will run quite nicely - Cyprus is not my only market.. it's any where with Russian / Irish / UK expats

BUT mmmmmm - you avoid not only my questions, but others too - why?

£199 for the same product that you sell for £489 and you charge £90 for delivery which is more than I charge to install a whole sat' TV system - how can that be fair?

cost of HD receiver on one of your 20+ web sites inc. delivery@ £90 = £489.00 - http://skycards.us/HD.html = 326% profit

Tell me EXACTLY what I failed to answer ? .. We were hoping you might tell us what 'untruths' I had spoken - I say *we* as I'm not the only poster that noticed your evasiveness re specifics..

HOW MANY TIMES? The HD receiver price is 399 GBP... I charge 299 with a subscription and delivery to EU via insured Fedex is not 90 GBP - is it... ? As other folks can visit the site for themselves - I wonder why you would TRY to 'fib'

You could also note that *I* don't charge an admin fee for SKY subscriptions ( some cos try to charge 150 GBP -annually !! )

Folks pay the going rate for the appropriate sub ... I HATE cos that try to con folks - just because they live abroad...

DutchyCrusdey,

Sarcasm isn't your strongest point, is it. I really do hope your not considering the fact that TRNC should have EU countries internet speeds and prices. If you are, it just goes to show how much of a lost soul you really are.

I feel sorry for you.....

cbcbcbcbcbcb,

Sorry for the name. I really couldn't find the words to use in mmmmmm, so I have adapted it to what I feel goes, Cheeky B****** Cheeky B****** Cheeky B****** X 2.

The fact of the matter is, I am football crazy, I want it in HD and I don't ever want to miss a goal! 46'' LED TV in the front room! I want the best...... I know 6 people who are crazy about football, like me, and just want the best! They got it, I saw it, then I got it! Highly recommend SatelliteCyprus, they are squeaky clean and answer the phone 24/7, Literally! If you want the best, HD is definably the way to go!
