Is it just us, or is the Call to Prayer in Karsiyaka being done too often? I'm sure it came twice this evening, close together, and the same has happened a couple of other times.

Plus the sound quality is terrible, apparently this is because it's being transmitted via satellite from Lefkosa, but why? What's wrong with the normal village hoca?

I'm not Muslim, so I dont know the ins and outs, but surely it's an important and spiritual thing for people, so to dehumanise it with a transmitted version seems a strange choice.

Anyone able to enlighten us?

NCWeddings, I have an honest question, are you asking this for real or trying to create yet another dispute.

Actually Paul, this is quite valid. The sound is absolutely appalling, even my turkish neighbours are complaining. also it keeps repeating....the sound is so dreadful, it's like a 1920's gramophone....only a gazillion times louder!

In that case sorry for asking, the muslim countries I have visited often have pre-recorded versions but if it is that bad then hopefully it will be sorted

Proger, you're obviously not here. I am really not trying to cause a dispute. What I am "honestly" asking is why it's suddenly changed. As I said, I'm not Muslim, but normally i love the Call to Prayer, I think it is a something beautiful to listen to and obviously is of great meaning.

But it's suddenly has a computerised "beep" to start it and finish it and crackles all the way through so you can't actually hear it at some points, and i'm sure it's coming on, and then again only half an hour or so later. I'm not complaining that it's on too often, we're just honestly baffled as to the change.

As Daisy Dukes said, it's not just me, a whinging brit that's mentioned it. i'm honestly not trying to cause an arguement, I'm just asking.

So this is the age of digital/satellite technology. I have to agree, we used to love hearing it, but now it sounds like the iman is having a breakdown.

We agree, we love to hear the call to prayer but I am afraid to say the last few days we have been dreading it! It sounds as if the speakers have blown, such a shame!

They will be connecting all the mosques to Lefkosa, this is being done because some of the mosques are a couple of minutes out on timing so they think this is a better way of doing it, but i agree with everyone else the sound is dreadful and i dont even want to listen to it anymore. Wish they would go back to how it was.

Do you have a local Hoca that you can ask? And what do your Turkish pseaking neighbours think. Perhaps a posse of caring folk should go visit the Hoca or someone in Lefkosia, because from what you say, it is dishonouring to Allah, and no self respecting Moslem would want that. Someone must be responsible locally, so I would suggest you track someone down. It could just be the fault of equipment that needs a little tweak from an expert.

Having asked a local the prayer is only suppose to be read the once but he appears to read it twice and no it does get transmitted from lefkosa it is the Hoca himself reading!!! Maybe you need to have a word with your local Muktar to talk to him.

Are you sure that it's not being transmitted? What is the funny beeping at each end? There was a very definite change in the sound from when we had "our" hoca (s) to the sound now. It does kind of sound transmitted. Could be wrong of course.

And I totally agree Maz, it does seem to be dishouring Allah, and surely the hoca was always an important and respected part of the village, to take away such a big part of life seems odd. I'm surprised no Cypriots/Turkish are upset with it.

Anyway, hopefully they'll realise it's not working and stop it!

i'm sure it is being transmitted from Lefkosa - they have been doing it for a while in other villages. I suppose it's just teething problems, but the whole concept of transmitting it from Lefkosa is baffling to me. It's like the church in England transmitting the bells ringing from one church to all the other churches - BIZARRE!

Ok I can understand in Lapta where they have 3 mosques very close to each other that it is a bit much with them all going off-sync. But surely they should just transmit from one of them to the other 2 so those 3 are in sync?

Most villages have only 1 mosque so there's no real need to be in time with everyone else.

Always loved the call to prayer in Karsiyaka - now dread it!!!! :o(

Did anyone hear the 5.30am one this morning...? Oh Lordy, every dog in the village started howling, it was so loud, and crackly...and just when you think it's over, it starts again....it went on for 10 mins!

At the shop earlier, the locals in there were all complaining about the volume, normally the morning call to prayer is quite low, but this mornings was not so low...oh well, i'm sure it wont be too long before we all get used to it again, a bit like living under a flight path, after a while you stop hearing it.

Daisy Dukes - I did hear it this morning at 5.30am and it just went on and on and on and on.

The thing is I don't want to stop hearing it because it sounds so crap - I want to hear it like it was before.

I'm sure the locals must hate it!!!!
