back home we had rats coming off the railway lines so I put a couple of traditional mouse traps down. Only ever caught a field mouse. I was so upset because I liked the mice in the garden scuttling around. A small family of them lived in a hole in our garden wall. They were so cute and friendly. Knew their place, unlike rats.

Lilli, If you've got some, the hollow leg of a plastic garden table with some feed in the bottom rested up against the wall in the upright position with anything they can climb up to the top will trap them... they climb up and drop in to get the food but can't get back up. You can then release it away from the house or get Guido to 'deal with it'.... Mice will be laying urine tracks along curtain poles, on top of kitchen units and all sorts... a real nuisance. Never had them here but in Hungerford in the UK we did.... took us ages to track the little bleeder down. We'd inadvertently brought it into the house with some decorating stuff from the garage. Guess he was hibernating...

You can make your own trap using a large sided bin, an empty foil or cling film roll. Balance the empty film roll on a worktop, or other area the mouse can get onto....place some cake (they don't like cheese) in the end of the roll and place a bin underneath the balanced end. Mouse walks into roll and to the end to get the cake, his weight causes the roll to tip and falls into the bin. Points to note: Must be high sided bin or they can jump out....they are very agile critters. The balance of the roll is critical as a mouse does not weigh much so make sure the slightest shift in weight will make the roll fall. If you want him dead, fill the bin half full of water.....if you want to release him....take him at least a mile away from your house as they will come back.

Hi Lilli, Try a humane trap made out of the biggest cola bottle you can get (2ltr ?) Cut the top off the bottle, just after the tapered bit and where the cut bit is the same diameter of remaining bottle. Place the top you have cut off upside down in remaining bottle, stick together with any sticky tape. In effect you have made an inverted tunnel. Mice like chocolate, nuts or cheese or maybe corn, anyway place any of these or all of these in the bottle. Then lay the bottle on it's side in places where you know the mouse goes, you may have to make more than one. I have to say I tried it, but with a smaller bottle and unfortunately it didn't work, I do think the size of the bottle is important and although I had to resort to poison in the end, I will never do that again, it upset me so much. I know people will say oh, it's only a mouse, but I say live and let live. There has to be a humane way to catch mice, we have to work on it. Best of luck. Nadymou

I bought Mouse poison in Lemar. Two saches in a pack with pink pellets, rather like the blue snail poison. My friend used it and it worked a treat. Maybe you can find a tube to put it in, so it's safe for the dogs.

Hi Lilly We have the same problem, we have a mouse which has come in from next doors garden while they were clearing all their weeds etc, have tried the mouse glue on card with nuts in the middle but has not gone near it, do not know where it is getting its food or water source from, its a real mystery. Like you do not want to use the old fashioned traps.

Stephan, have you shares in the company that make glue traps. Considered cruel but they don't have to be. I used a couple and checked them regularly, scraped the mice off into a bucket and deposited them a little way away near some other poor soul. Bit of squealing from the beastie, but no harm done. I now have a cat (who is bone idle)

Hi Lilli, I still run a pest control company in the UK. I know you are looking for a humane way to get rid of the problem but if you have a bad problem using the humane traps may prove ineffective in reducing the numbers. I am not sure if you dont want to use poison but if you do although it kills them most of the poisons do so humanely, meaning that the mice must not suffer any pain. Most poisons are anticouagualants and work by thinning the blood normally it makes them drowsy and takes a couple of daysd to take effect. The mice normally go to sleep and die. With regards to your pets i would recommend that you put any poison under your kitchen units which would be inaccessible to the dogs you can also place bait behind fridges, cupboards under the stairs, under bath panels, airing cupboards to name a few places. Make sure the baits are put up against a wall as the mice normally come out at night and use their whiskers to feel their way round. If you need any more info let me k

I don't think when you have mice there is anyway to be humane about it. Try those sticky pads it worked for us when we had mice in an outbuilding. The trouble is they breed so fast its not just a mouse you have it could be many more. They love pasta as a friend of our found out in the uk, it was the pasta packet they raided everytime. Good luck.

Those sticky pads are ever so cruel especially if they are not checked on a regular basis. In the UK if a pest control company puts them down in a property they have to check them every day by law. They really are inhumane. You can get more info on mice from my site http://www.pest3.com

Grouch I do believe you me, it drives me mad, only thing is by the time i get home i cant find them, only once did i see one. I have scrubbed the units today with vinegar and anti bacterial fluid, i am neurotic about cleanliness. The house we are in is an old farmhouse type on the sea.i get creatures here i have never ever seen before. As long as they wont hurt us I wont hurt them as i also beleive in nature and what they do to each other. This week there has been less but tomorrow i will get some of the items you all told me about. It was my own stupid fault about the biscuits as I now put everything in containers, but I buy these for the dogs as my mojo loves them and stupidly left them out. Otherwise the poor mice would starve in this house. However you are very knowledgeable do you think they would go for the dogs dried food as there is always a big bowl out

Lilli as best you can put everything in sealed containers as if you remove the food source it does discourage them. Also remember the bin is also a food source so make sure this has a lid on it.

well we have caught both mice and a rat in humane traps I get hubby to drive to a nearby field or wooded area and let them go! I too hate kiling anything. The rat was last winter when we had all the snow used to come out from under our decking and eat the food I put out for the birds so put a trap down caught a blackbird first night poor thing - it was ok though and let it go. Then we caught ratty it was a baby one but squealed like hell whilst it was trapped. Mice like sweet things I caught mine with jam - just put humane trap down and then let them go Lillie Good luck - I have images of Tom & Jerry now with the mouse laughing at you from his mouse hole !

apc didnt say i would , in fact i dont serve bambi foie gras , let the others do it, i wont even do the bills but we have to give them what they want. By the way Im not a veggie but I do have some standards which go against the grain. I eat a steak once a month as I need blood because Im anemic and cant eat liver. I was forced feed it whilst pregnant with my oldest daughter, she is now 43. Couldnt take iron or iron tabletsI know its hyopcritical but as long as i dont see it im ok. So when Veal Venision etc comes in Im out. I cant even be introduced to the lobsters. so i guess im wrong xxxxx

apc i get upset now when i see the trucks with the animals on, i cry as i know where they are going. Living here has taught me so much about animals. I didnt have a dog until the yer I came here. That was only because we got burgaled and took a STAFFI,. We were never coming for ever only for 6 moths so my son had him. Our life changed we bvought with gay robb, took on the brasserie to help friends out who did a runner on us. so we are here trying to survive. Bottom line brought the staffi here my baby, hates the heat like his irish mammy me. As I said i have my once a month steak but i see the pleasure in all who eat the steaks , pork chops etc. Im bloody irish anyway and we didnt have meat only potatoes ans cabbage, what do all the top restaurants serve now colcannon. (cabbage and pototoe mixed) I love it xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi, Not sure about mouse traps but we are currently importing some humane plug-in devices that are effective in clearing homes of pest problems including, mice, rats, spiders and ants. We have tried and tested them in the uk and found them very effective. Each unit covers 2000 sq. ft. They work by giving off an ultra sonic frequency that humans can't hear but pests can't stand. The manufacturers also believe that the elctromagnetic field the devices passes through the wiring of your house irriatating the pests making the environment undesirable. If anyone is interested in ordering some devices, let me know. Soraya
