does anyone know.. how easy/hard it is to obtain a mobile contract here? how much is the monthly line rental? are you offered a new phone with the contract? are they anything like the UK contracts? are there any good package deals?? seem to be topping up every day with telsim 400-600 kontour and only lasting about 20-30mins on calls, looking for a cheaper option and cross network if possible thanks

Can't tell you much about Turkcell but Telsim contracts can be sorted in their shop in Girne and the basic monthly charge is only about 2 or 3 TL, extra if you have international roaming. You can choose to have an all inclusive amount of minutes of calls to any other mobile (Telsim or Turkcell) plus TRNC landlines. I have 500 minutes per month for 69TL but you can have lesser amounts. I believe that Turkcell do similar but restricted to Turkcell to Turkcell only but somebody will no doubt correct me if this is not the case. If you go to Telsim, take your passport with you as they photocopy it.

I think these two companies are going to be beating the shit out of each other in a forth coming court case about lies in advertising speed allegations. Richard

are there any other phone companies here? i might even go into both shops and compare their deals the speeds out here arent that great the servers are in nicosia (for my broadband provider at least) were on the "last mile" this side of the mountain and mostly wireless i wouldnt expect the connection to get any better with any company it was the same back home.. i worked for sky tiscali and a few other companies. they can say "upto" 20MB and the line might only support dial up. we always told people what theyd actually get but out here i find the language barrier (my own fault) makes it harder for this to be explained to us.

The easiest way to answer your questions is to check out the respective websites. Turkcell site is in English & Turkish. URL for English site is below. http://www.kktcell.com/kktcell/default_en.html The Telsim site is only in Turkish. if you have a smattering of Turkish, you should be able to cope. http://www.kktctelsim.com/index.asp?menu=main IMO Turkcell is best. 85% of my phonebook contacts use Turkcell- 0533 numbers. Telsim is 0542. There are big cost advantages to using the supplier that you have the most contacts for, in your phonebook. Both providers charge twice the price for calls to the other provider.

Sorry, I missed this one. No phones with contracts here. This is not the UK. Not easy to get a contract unless you have Temp. residency or a property here. They have clearly had problems with inpaid bills from Expats who have done a flit in the past. If you have residency, then a contract is easy to get.
