I am going to pick my husband up from Larnaca Airport on Friday and as it's my 1st trip driving south I have a few questions. I have searched the forum and found the route so ok with that.

The insurance & tax? at the crossing point - does this need to be paid in Euros or can I use a card?

How much is the short stay car park at the airport and again, can I pay by card or are Euro s required? is it 'pay at machine' or is there a pay booth?

If I need Euros for all this where's the best place to exchange some Turkish Lira - does anyone know if the money exchange near the DVD shop in Alsankak will do this for me?

Sorry for so many questions at once but starting to panic a bit now at the thought of venturing over to the 'dark side' and want to be prepared!

It's not car tax exemption its MOT... So you have to have the car with you.

We tried to sort it out when going over in someone else's car and they explained that this was not possible as how could the engineer in the MOT inspect our car if we didn't have it with us.

This post is not intended to annoy previous poster it's just for information in case anybody thinks (like we did) that you wouldn't need the vehicle with you to get the documentation.... you do.

Msg 5 Groucho

Oh heck I'd better go a few days before then in case my old jalopy fails the test - it's just passed for 3 years here but they were far more concerned with mudflaps than whether it was roadworthy or not! I shall go in advance and if it fails I'll order the ole man a taxi!

1. Because you are an EU citizen (I know that TC's are as well but it does not apply to them) you have to have your UK driving licence with you - your TRNC licence is not valid in the ROC but the TC's TRNC licence is - beat me.

2. You need your vehicle and your current MOT (TRNC) paperwork, park your vehicle where the policeman can see it from his office (They dont like to get out of their chair) and he will issue you with another bit of paper - I think it is the tax exemption certificate.

3. Take that bit of paper and all your other bits to the first insurance kiosk and insure for a month - last time I did it it was 25 Euros for the month (That is for a car not a 4X4).

There is no "Best" place to change Euros, just drive around till you are bored of trying to save 10P and change some!

Good luck.

4. The car parking fees at Larnaca are on their web site. http://www.cyprusairports.com.cy/showpage.php?PageID=67 It is a pay machine and best to take some Euro coin

Hi Maggie

You can pay insurance with a card or in euro...you will need to go to the first desk to get a road tax doc. (I think its called!) which is free and then go to the Insurance booth.

There are ticket machines at the carpark in Larnaca that take euro's...although around half hour is usually free.

I've seen various transfer services advertised on here, some from £30.. How does this compare?

I know I could just book him a taxi, and if it was a late night flight I probably would. But regardless of the cost, having not seen my husband for 2 months, I thought it might be nice if I was there to meet him!

If you need to exchange money do it before getting to Metehan, on the main road there are two exchange shops on the right hand side, in the last parade of shops.

The ROC customs will direct you to the correct offices for what you need.

You are not required to have an MOT test in the South. The 'MOT' paperwork that they (the South) provide is merely a formality. You pay for your South insurance then take this along with the paperwork for your car to the booth next door and the 'MOT' paperwork will be issued free of charge.

Hope this clarifies the situation.

I have never had my car looked at for MOT and tax, it is just a formality. Go to the tax office (only open during the week and I think it closes at 2.30pm) with your car paperwork and your UK licence, they will fill in a form which you then take to any of the insurance kiosks ( I think there is at least one open all the time) 25 euros for 1 month and off you go!

Enjoy your reunion!

There is also a "window" at Larnaca airport (opposite the pay machines) where you can pay for parking with a credit card.
