We have a house above the village of Malatya, and recently the Belediyese have started tipping rubbish into the ravine just beyond the village. A lot is garden rubbish, but there are also non degradeable items as well. We have several concerns. The lorries are using a very narrow track which is unmade and turning round just after a small bridge. They will not reverse & when we come up to our house we have had some very hairy moments. The bridge, we feel may not be able to cope with all the heavy lorries, and if it collapses we could not get to our house.

There is also a huge fire risk. One match and it could all go up. We do not want a repeat of the last Malatya fire which caused massive damage. Finally they are ruining a beautiful area

We have been to the Belediyese offices who have denied it is them. However we have taken ptographs of the lorry which has their name on the side. In desperation we called in Cyprus Today but it is still going on.

What else can we do?

This has only been used for rubbish recently and is brought in from the Alsancack area. it is not from us as we do not have a collection. I appreciate that rubbish has to go somewhere but this is a spot that has a beautiful deep gorge and where people picnic. It is not near our house so I am not a NIMBY but it is a fire risk as the ravine is full of trees which of course are very dry at this time of year. I just wanted some advice as quite a few people using this road are affected. It must also affect the village with large lorries trundling through.

Go back to the belidiyse with the photo of there lorry they then will probably tell you thats where they dump it now or they may stop doing it or try putting no tipping signs out.

Following the floods I thought that it was illegal to build or dump waste in ravines as these form natural watercourses.??

Why does it not surprise me that the Belediyese even think that it is OK to dump rubbish illegally. The driver is probably too idle to drive to the proper tip !!

The area in question used to be a tourist attraction, mainly pre 1974, but even after for a while. Now totally ruined because of several factors, one of which is the rubbish dumping. Yes it is a council lorry. I too have photographs. It has been reported to the Environmental Group, and was also reported by the Andersons, the travel writers. It seems that Alsancak does not care for the environment, or their lorry driver doesn't. Is this a lazy driver, or the policyh of the Mayor.

I think this should be taken to nice Mr Atakara, and/or the government/ politicians.

The rubbish dumped is ugly. It is an area fdor walkers, and so tourists go back with bad stories of the 'beauty of Cyprus'. And if anyone says 'Well, where do they dump it' - the answer is 'in the proper place, such as Dikmen, or somewhere hidden away from human eyes. Not too difficult, surely. And fire hazard it most surely is.

Have you asked for 5 minutes with the Mayor who might at least explain why this is happening and perhaps do something about it if he accepts your concerns ? The Alsancak Mayor intervened when told that the Belediyese were acting improperly on a particular issue.

rowlo, your the idiot. Lets just get them to dump it in your garden. There are numerous ways of disposing of rubbish. The easiest and cheapest is just to take it to a land fill area away from populated areas. A better way is to recycle, turn rubbish into bio-fuel. The council where I used to live in the UK do that. Obviously they can't do it with all the waste so they incinerate it. They have big powerful filters in the chimneys.

Rowlo, I find your comments offensive, out of order and unnecessary, and I am sure that the person who started this thread would feel the same. Whatever the price we may or may not have paid for our houses has little bearing on the lack of conc\ern for the environment by the local council.

The Welsh valleys are cleaner than here and yet property prices are about the same in some of the old mining towns. Civic pride is what is lacking here. And as for thinking that the rubbish dumped is that belonging to us - it is not - it is old tyres, old chairs, old settees, old steel boards, old matresses etc, etc, etc. Nothing like what is left for the bin men, so goodness only knows from whence it comes.

I repeat I find your terminology offensive and it is people such as you who are responsible for many people leaving the board . We want to clean up our areas, but I suggest you clean up your act!

Thats the whole point ,best form of defence is attack. If one can turn discussing a problem of litter and rubbish dumping in NC into an insulting slanging match then it deflects from the embarrassment of

trying to defend the indefensible.

Next line of defense is that its always someone elses fault. The brits buying houses, the Turkish mainlanders.the GC's,

£80,million was given in aid by Turkey this year,£1million would be enough educate people about clearing rubbish up, though I suspect as mature adults they know already ,and perhaps some of the largesse used up on Beamers and Mercs could be diverted to rubbish collection/ lorries and a proper waste disposal system.

Start a "Keep TRNC Tidy" campaign it worked eventually in the UK. On a smaller scale get more litter bins around the streets. The rubbish on the beach at Lapta is getting beyond a joke. With the number of Efes bottles discarded from cars are we surprised fires start!.

Trouble is ,you can educate people .ie "put trash in the correct place".What you can't do is instil a sense of "PRIDE" that unfortunately only comes from within! Without Self Pride NO amount of HAND-OUT'S will fix the un-fixable.......... Sad is't it ...

I believe that the mayor has been informed but dumping carries on. Sometimes they even block the road with it. I have taken photos but the lorry driver got wise and will now not let me near. I know the number of the lorry off by heart.

Someone mentioned floods. This area was devastated in this years floods and the road was blocked in several places. I cannot imagine what will happen if the ravine is blocked.

Intoroducing strict "Law" is OK to a point but will NOT influence the "unscrupulous"...Potentially blocking natural water" RUN OFF" channels, is as mentioned by "flossie44"is a serious concern ,and should be strictly monitored in order to overt a pending disaster.....But will the authorities listen ? I doubt it....

Lindsay,I fully agree with you ,but being TRNC and therefore " Par for the coarse"is neither a reason or an excuse. until the people develop some" Brain" matter this antisocial behaviour will continue..........Perhaps a continuous stream of letters to Cyprus Today may trigger a response...............To me, the fact that they TRASH there own beauty spots does not make me think that change is in the air.

I too live in Malatya and feel the same way about the rubbish being dumped near the waterfall. Surely there are many quarries which could be infilled and which are not near residential areas. Just a thought or even suggestion. I think this is what the original message wanted - some positive feedback and not continual backbiting.

How about some more newspaper articles? Trouble is not sure the government read the English ones - but maybe something in the Turkish speaking press? So in order to give good info, does anyone else have any other thoughts that can be passed on.

And to Hilda, not sure what you mean about Rowlo. Please explain. And why does Simbas have the right idea?
