Went to ANI Restaurant in Catalkoy last night. Had a lovely meal - no menu - just mezze and your choice of main course. That's not uncommon here and usually reasonably priced. We were shocked when we got the bill - 120 YTL for two of us. My husband queried the bill with the owner and he was told that sea bass plus mezze was 45YTL, mixed kebab plus mezze was 35YTL, a bottle of Angora was 30YTL and a local gin and tonic was 10YTL. They forgot to charge us for a bottle of Efes and a bottle of water! The moral of the story is - don't make assumptions and don't go to ANI unless you've got lots of YTL.

Ani used to be affordable. I wonder if the locals who frequent the place would have paid a fraction of your bill. One of the best seafood mezes on the island, though, so insist on a menu with prices.

Well we have just been to the Ani . I had the fish my better half had the chicken . We had one Efes and one wine. We were charged 100 TL. Didn`t complain as i was in shock.but owner did a double take of our LOCAL credit card then asked us if we lived there and if we were local. We said yes......but although the food was great we won`t go there again....enough places around that deserve our support without being ripped off........

We, too, used to love going to the Ani restaurant but needless to say we do not go anymore due the prices. What surprises me, is that it always used to be full of locals so either they can afford these extortionate prices or they get a different price ...... I don't know the answer to this as I couldn't be bothered to look into it.

We now NEVER eat in a restaurant without a menu or menu board and this is probably the reason we haven't eaten in the Buffavento restaurant because we were told what was on offer and when we asked for a menu, they said you don't need one and yet many members of this forum comment on how good it is.

mess 5 - there is no way in "the reign of pigs puddin" (as my old Uncle Percy used to say), do the locals get the same prices as we Brits....

We went there once and didn't see a menu, the crafty owner telling us what was on offer, then after we'd eaten, the inflated bill arrived...

Our own fault really - any needless to say, we didn't return.....

NN,

It is for the reason you state that we no longer will sit in any restaurant WITHOUT a menu or menu board showing prices of both food and alcohol (which is where we have been caught out on a few occasions).

If there is no menu (or prices) displayed, then I would suggest asking the waiter how much particular dishes are. If you don't agree with the price, then simply walk out. They will soon get the message. !!

I must be a bit naive .....................I didn`t realise how much of this went on.

It was a real shame about Ani................the food was really good.............reasonable sized portions.................good atmosphere.......full of locals........................and up till the point where we got our bill.............we thought.." great ....we have found a LOCAL RESTAURANT WITH TRADITIONAL FOOD ".

Why do the stuff you....................??????????????

If it is because they think .ok Brits we can make a killing here...............well by doing this they will only do it once........Don`t they realise that we could be regular GOOD PAYING CUSTOMERS??????

Morning All,

what a disappointing Topic.

On a personal level I have never had such an experience in twenty years, probably because I smile a lot and people tend to like me!!!

But being serious if this is a big issue why not start up a name and shame List with the named restaurant being invited to comment on this site.

regards

Doug

By law, the restaurants and bars must display their prices. If they don't give you a menu or price list get up and walk out.

We only went to Ani once as we also had a huge bill, and we queried it, and told them they should display their prices. We got the usual shrug.

If you are looking for a LOCAL RESTAURANT WITH TRADITIONAL FOOD then try the Tervetuloa in Alsancak their food is excellent, priced (to include 15+ meze) and their booze prices are reasonable too. Always get the free brandy or coffee at the end.... marvellous (excellent for vegetarians as well)

Msg 19

I'd second that about Tervetuloa Hotel in Alsancak. Just down the side road that leads to the Merit hotel, on the left hand side. 1st building after the corner.

Excellent meze (best I've had), varied & excellent mains. Very large portions of both. Large bottle of water included in the price & baklava & fruit too. Priced according to the main course chosen to include mezes & desert, coffee & brandy on the house. Or the generous Meze only for a lower price. Especially good lamb chops, meaty & large. Average price last year for the mezes, mains etc. about 25 TL per person. Drinks extra.

Highly recommended.

Is it still rice and chips with any main course, fine if it's chicken shish etc but not so good if having chops or liver, that's when you want potatoes and veg !

Re the Buffavento - Never seen a menu there but it is great food and very competetively priced. We have never been ripped off there, but can't speak for other places.

Msg 22

Yes chips & rice. I always have rice with everything here. I love the rice here. I can live without chips. You don't have to have rice, but it is a Turkish thing to serve it. When in Rome etc. I'd be hard pushed eating chips & rice as well.

There are soo many good places to eat, I'm surprised these places with inflated prices still exist. Unfortunately his practise is not restricted to North Cyprus
