I love Hilltop Bar & Restaurant because it has a good atmosphere and lovely fish and chips. Also very much like Cyprus House down by the old courthouse in Famagusta - it is in the old police house and is great for authentic local food and has live music once a week - we usually go in a group of 6 - 10, phone in advance and they put on a good buffet. Sorry don't have the phone no on me.

bigOz I second that, home cooked food. I make everything under the sun and it's always better than what you get in ANY restaurant. If we go to a restaurant we end up coming away thinking how much better I would have made it. (Although my dad does think Guido does a lovely steak )

My favourite restaurant, no matter where in the World I am is to know the chef well enough to ask him/her what I exactly want and to cook/prepare to my request. I do not agree with the typical Turkish chef mentality that he/she knows better than I as the paying customer and deliver a plate of food which was not ordered or asked for naively believing it would be better for me! Hence, I stick with Guido. Richard

We have only been twice to North Cyprus so far, but our favourites are Guidos, Veranda and Ambiance. Veranda and Ambiance we visited last year as well as this year, but Guidos was a first for us this year and we went 4 or 5 times in 3 weeks as the food was absolutely excellent.

I should also have mentioned the restaurant opposite the Exotic Hotel in Bogaz, the one with the jetty over the sea and the huge fish swimming there - always busy as they never 'load' your bill with any extras - popular with visitors and locals alike.

Ah! Just the North! Scottys is in the South so you can forget that one. In the North - "Rita from the Rocks", sadly now closed but never found another like it anywhere. Of all those still open - There is a scruffy little place up in the mountains on the Five Fingers side as you get up to the large pick nick area. Don't know the name and it is only open during the summer season at odd times but when it is open the food is great and the people who go there are all locals and happy! Guess I am a fan of cheap and cheerful and not Cratos glitz and glitter.

msg 46, The Big Man, I've tried various dishes at the Ravine and not enjoyed them. Had the fish and chips and wasn't keen. Had chicken in pepper sauce one day. The sauce was basically just cream with a few black peppercorns (the sort you grind) thrown in, you're supposed to use pickled green peppercorns, it was extremely bland to say the least. I gave them the benefit of the doubt on more than occasion but have always still been disapointed, hence I don't go there anymore.

Went to the Grapevine last night, first time for a few years, Steak was superb hubby says, I had lamb chops with mint relish, and friend had Chicken Kiev, lovely chips and garlic mushrooms, however too many veggies, didn't need them so a bit of a waste. Nice ambience, classical music. Everyone enjoyed. Not good on recommending places, as they can change weekly, however Errols in Ozankoy is always good. Sele for Sunday lunch and I personally like the Courtyard Curries.

Not sure of the best but the wooden shalet style restaurant at the foot of 5 finger mountain must be the most improved. It has been refurbished and in the lattter part of this Summer past has been very busy with many Foreign and Cypriot customers. The food is excellent and the main courses are accompanied by many extras and side dishes making a starter unnecessary apart from those with massive appetites. The staff are splendidly attired and very friendly. Gastronomic enjoyment has been followed by bills well below what I expected.

The Veranda seems to get alot of mention. Must try it, from the pictures it looks like Charcos with a view? St Tropaz - I seem to recall the infamous little nige dropping a frozen veg comment... So have never been. Is it really nice? Nobody has mentioned The Address, and cant say that I blame them as Ambiance is FAR superior.

Nobody's mentioned the 'Kyrenia Tavern'. Lovely setting in the Summer months with great authentic Turkish cuisine, served up by that delightful old couple who've been in the catering business for over 40 years. Nothing swish, just homely, honest good food with fresh ingredients. Hope they're still going......?

Msg 70 I mentioned the Address in No 38 and as far as I am concerned prefer it to the Ambience, on our one and only visit to the Ambience it seemed if you were not one of the incrowd the service was poor, and as for the "T" bone that was delivered to me I have thicker bacon rashers, hence now we use the Address, for any special evenings whilst we are out there.

I have been to Address and it is excellent. They do a Chataubriand ? which is lovely with any sauce you require. Service is also excellent, if a little slow at the beginning. Really recommend

sadoldbird, chateaubriand should be served with a selection of sauces. Best I have had was in Brussels, Belgium. My father used to have it every night at this place with a bottle of Chateau Neuf De Pap when he worked over there. On a different subject, I was talking to the chef at the Topkapi Palace restaurant in Manchester one evening when myself and a friend were dining there and it turns out that he is from Lapta. He does the most amazing Adana kebabs.

Have to agree with Alanka, Hilltop is fab. The steaks are to die for. But then Kiyi opposite the Exotic hotel with the pier going out to sea is also amazing. Great with kids, always has loads of locals and very good prices. There is also a very very good kebab place next to Jonny Rockets in Famagusta. Never seen that place empty.

Try 14 in Girne - brilliant meal last week. Kybele a bit of a let down this time - sirloin like shoe leather and about as thick. My wifes fillet steak however was brilliant.

Charcos without a doubt...........and yes Big Man it is still just as lovely at the new location. You must give it a try if you've not been yet. Same food, same lovely service & beautiful decor just a new home. Probably the most reasonably priced meal out you'll find.

Mess 113 have to agree, tried all the Indian/Pakistani restaurants here and most are disappointing, some better than others, Nosheen was a cut above the rest but on the whole can do better at home. They are ok for basic things but I find the food cooked or more usually overcooked and with little taste or much care taken. You would get much better quality in the UK but at a higher price of course.

Not much mention of the east side! Bar B, Kucuk Erenkoy for superb fish Hatti's , Essentepe for home made Turkish For special occasion cannot get better than The Rocks main restaurant. A long way to go but have to agree with Silver rocks as one of the best. Worth the trip!

Nosheens for Indian and Punjab for Sunday lunch....just returned after 3 weeks there and half a stone heavier :o( only sorry we didn't get to go to Guidos...did try but it was the night of the electric storm and when we arrived there was no power....never mind, back in February so hopefully you're still open Lilli. |

Pasta Mania for me - just love their crumbed mushrooms, not at all greasy & the lasagne too, can never finish my portion but they wrap it up & take it home for the cats to enjoy. Tervetuloa is good value & The Ravine when we just want to nip down the road for a bite to eat!

Has no one been to Anibal in Lefkoşa? Excellent kebabs since 1960s (same family owners). Taste can compete easily with anything you eat at Niazi but you would get three times as much food with full bowl of traditional yogurt, and a huge plate of humus. Price around 25% cheaper than Niazi's!

The moral is .................. every one of us has different palat. I noticed some members classify a good restaurant from location and setting. i prefer to call a good restaurant where service, freshly cooked food and no frozen stuff is served. i tried some of the places above mention and i think my god......... then again what do i know? just a thought from an arrogant italian with little knowledge and not understanding of british mentality. guido

Prefer Address to Ambience. Better, friendlier and quicker service. A lot more food for the same price (bigger steaks, chick breasts, mezes etc, all cooked to perfection. On the sea front also, maybe not literally sitting over the sea but i would personally choose Address.
