As a newcomer to the island I was wondering how many Englishmen in Girne over the age of 40 wear earrings and are bald?

Personally can't say I've noticed a single one. Maybe me just being unobservant or just not caring less ;-) I have a full head of hair and not a single piercing or tattoo anywhere.

'tis only the prats that wear earrings - especially the bald over 50 trying to look 25 as far as I am concerned, but then even the 25 year olds with earrings do my head in especially if they have earrings in both ears..... earrings belong to the sailors because then they look at least manly and 'exotic' - does not work when a man is wearing a cheap 'pretend' diamond in his ear, never mind both ears, the only thing missing is the handbag...

I must admit there is nothing more of a turn-off than an old bloke, bald (even worse when sporting a 'pony tail)' wearing an earring (or even two), a large chav-style gold necklace, chunky gold bracelet(s) and, to complete the outfit - Speedos. A marvellous look, as I believe all the ladies would agree

Tattoos do my head in, especially on women and why on their back just above their bum? A provocative invitation to be sodomised? Beggars belief! Richard

Brinsley - what really worries me is that these women will eventually be granny aged, the skin will sag, and so will the tattoo, so whereas it now points towards their backsides, it will eventually end up as a big blob on their ankles. And actuallyy, why do they think they have to have a map on their backs to direct somebody/anybody towards their backsides?? What happened to 'here's me boobs and here's me arse'? When women were well dressed, and in there was no mistaking which part of them should be attractive. Are the youth of today so badly educated they need maps, in the form of tattoos to show them the way?? Yours, in despare

Just to throw my view into the mix. Am over 40, Scottish, plenty of hair and have tattoos and an ear ring, real diamond although I doubt if anyone has ever been close enough to it to tell the difference. I stopped wearing an ear ring for a while and my wife bought me this one so she must like it. That I suppose is my point, I don't wear anything to impress the people I don't know, I do it because it appeases the people I do know so if you don't like the look of me, don't look. I certainly only look extra hard at the things I like the look of but don't go around complaining to people that they don't look good to me, if I did I would have been strangled by several hundred oversized girls in lycra skirts and shorts by now.

I am 49 years old Balding so I crop my hair to 1mm yes I am extensively tattooed a throwback from my youth, I too on occaision wear the earing my wife bought me and yes it is a real diamond. The difference between a Tattooed person and a non tattooed person is I don't mind if you are not tattooed. I have over the years learned to forget that my tattoos are there I have had them that long, if you have hang ups about them that is your problem not mine. When you can see my tattoos it is not trying to impress or intimidate it is because it is hot and I am wearing comfortable clothes for the climate. When I am in the office yes, I am heavily tattooed and work in a professional environment Shock Horror, you can not see my tattoos yet I work on Billion Dollar contracts. Same professional ability Tattooed or not.....

The only adornments I have ever worn in my life are military ID discs and a St Christopher which I had to wear as it was bought by my mother in law ! Have waited 48 years for my Wildebeest (bless her) to decide whether or not I am worth a wedding ring, and still waiting. I never wear a watch. Clocks on TV, PC, kitchen, lounge, bedrooms, car, buildings etc. I recommend "unwinding" by discarding watches so that you develop a sixth sense of the approximate time but your life is not driven by time

deputyd, part of the reason I even have an ear ring and tattoos is the military telling me for so long, NO, NO, NO, NO because it obviously affected my abilities, not.

It's a human survival instinct, isn't it, to 'judge a book by its cover'? I'd offer an alternative phrase -First Impressions are Lasting Impressions'

proger, I had always thought that there is no problem with tattoos in the military and this is often when many people had them done, through heavy nights out on the beer or peer pressure, is this no longer the case?

Pugwash, it is one of those strange military rules at least it is in the british army. A tattoo, just like an ear piercing or a venereal disease or believe it or not even sunburn is considered to be a self inflicted injury and as such is a jailable offence. I never actually heard of it being enforced for a tattoo or piercing, I did hear of it once for sunburn (the guy did it 3 times in a week and couldn't move) and 2 guys for having veneral disease being jailed and then discharched however that was more to do with them reporting to the medical centre on the same day and one had the disease in the front and one in the back and they shared a room. In some branches of the military it is not advisable to have any obvious distinguishable markings.

Paul, that is correct mate in the 70's whilst in the Army I was fined 75 quid after getting 3 new tattoos 25 quid each three charges of self inflicted wounds, strange as you also got charged the same amount if you had a hicky (lovebite) visible above the collar too.
