Pugwash, I was of course referring to the Hilton in the Southern part of Amsterdam. Are you sure there's a Hilton on the Dam? Honestly, I didn't know that! I only know two big buildings on the Dam: Krasnapolski Hotel and - opposite - one of the Royal Palaces (formerly the Amsterdam city hall) ... I'm obviously away for too long now...

RE msg 12, Brinsley: No need to worry, Richard! The river IS called "de Amstel" and gave the little village its name in the Middle Ages: Amstelredamme (a dam in the river Amstel). Later it became Amsterdam. And now I'm going out for a fine farewell fish diner in Karşiyaka. Enjoy your meal, all of you!

I had many a happy stay in Ouderkirk de Amstel (Old Church), Opposite Amstelveen in my youth, even rowed across the river to the otherside to a pub, and back again! Please, no spelling corrections needed! Richard

OK, Richard, no spelling corrections then... But the pub you mention is called (I bet) "De Paardenstal" (The Horse Stable). We had meetings there when I worked for the news paper in Amsterdam. Good place! Fine steaks...

Hans You might even know the well known Dutch architect Father of me ex-fiance, Verster? Built a beautiful house on the banks of the Amstel, maybe opposite the restaurant you frequented! Richard

an English breakfast should have at least 3 rashers of bacon and they should charge for it, 1 rasher is dissatisfying, if your going to do it then do it properly !!

Tried the breakfast there today (with a slice of black pudding). I must congratulate them on an excellent english breakfast, a couple of mushrooms would have been nice but what the hell, next time I'll take a couple and ask them to chuck them in the frying pan aswell ;-) Best english breakfast I have had here.

best English Breakfast I ever had was at the Lodore Hotel on Derwentwater many moons ago. Here is what you got:- Local dry cure bacon (back or streaky or both) Local sausages Choice of eggs Fried bread Mushrooms Tomatoes Black Pudding White Pudding Kidneys (didn't have) Potato Cake As much toast and jam/marmalade as you wanted. Oat cakes ------------------"""----------------------- Properly brewed English Breakfast Tea (or coffee) Choice of juices As much cereal, fruits and home made yoghurt as you wanted. To be honest you need to rest for a few hours before hiking after all that ;) ;)

LaptaMike, I have had many breakfast's in the Lake district, all just as you have described, and yes you certainly need to rest before you walk/hike anywhere! You can eat as little or as much as you want, and what fantastic scenery! and even though the weather sometimes can be a little, shall we say invigorating! it is so clean, and the wildlife on the lakes are a joy to behold!

msg47, I was born and bred up there until I moved south (To Cheshire) when I was 14. I'm always getting little urges to get my boots on and pop up there. Hard to do now though. Means getting a flight etc etc etc. With regards to the weather, I love it up there whatever the weather. If it's chucking it down (most of the time) you get to see things you wouldn't on a really sunny day like something as simple as watching a raindrop drop off the tip of a leaf. On a really stormy, windy day, watching the trees fighting against mother nature. Nature is beautiful. Here's me getting nostalgic for the lakes. Simple things like above seem more beautiful to me up in the lakes. Pity they spoil it here by chucking rubbish everywhere.
